Have you seen Australians dance to flamenco rock played by three skeletons? I have. That’s what Kallidad is all about. An unique genre of music they have titled ‘Flamingo’. Two Spanish guitars and a box drum. That is all they need.
I first saw Kallidad 3 years ago at Splendour In The Grass at what they called “The Global Village”. Their presence was so strong that they stuck in my memory like the bond between dried nacho cheese and the last chips on your plate. I remember sitting waiting, curious to see this “Mariachi Rock Band” everyone was talking about. I was not ready for what I was about to see. Their theatrical performance puts us somewhere between heavy metal, the day of the dead, and Spanish classical guitar flamenco.

The crowd seem to ask for a mosh pit this week at their show at The Factory Theatre, but the flamenco roots were so strong, that even the most stoic of rockers couldn’t help but groove and dance instead of banging their body against their fellow rockers. The two-set performance contained a much-needed intermission. A little time for us to discuss what we had just seen. A lot to take in. Fervor. Ardor. Zest. 3 Amigos and a lot of gusto.
The insane energy, passion and ferocity Kallidad puts into every note can only be truly appreciated live. Even their live albums don’t do them full justice. This act is must be seen with your own skeleton eyes, before they are hollow and you find yourself 6 feet underground. Lucky for you, they are touring. You can catch them in Queensland, New South Wales and even New Zealand in the next few weeks.
