After a seven-year wait, pop icon KESHA finally returned to Australia for an exclusive two nights only to play her iconic hits and more. This was her ‘House of KESHA’ tour promotion and it is exactly as described. Her Sydney show at the Enmore Theatre on Thursday, January 23rd, was a predictably sold-out affair. The intimate venue, with a capacity of under 5,000, amplified the excitement, making this long-awaited return even more special.

“House of Kesha” lived up to its name, a vibrant celebration of life, individuality, and strength. The atmosphere was electric, a full-blown party reflected in the diverse crowd’s dazzling attire. From glitter and fishnets to towering heels and casual board shorts and tank tops, the audience underscored the breadth of Kesha’s appeal and embodied her eclectic spirit.

The energy built throughout the evening, starting with openers Kavi and DJ Alex Dugan, followed by two drag queens who sashayed across the stage, delivering spirited renditions of gay bar classics like ABBA’s “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).” Sydney native Kavi played a blend of high energy bops and sentimental pieces. There was a lot of personality and fun before Kesha finally graced the stage at roughly 10:30pm. While the late start, especially on a weekday, was a drawback (perhaps exacerbated by work fatigue), the anticipation remained palpable.

The crowd erupted as Kesha appeared on a podium, sporting glitter and thigh-high boots, and launched into “Freedom.” Four charismatic dancers joined her, their dynamic choreography bringing her lyrics to life and amplifying the energy. They added a visual dimension to the music.

Kesha’s setlist was a well-balanced mix of new and old material, heavily featuring her classic hits like “TiK ToK,” “Take It Off,” “Blow,” and “Your Love Is My Drug.” A mid-show costume change saw her swap leather for a red latex bodysuit, paired with more thigh-high boots.

The show’s explicit choreography and backdrops were a consistent and notable element. While undoubtedly a part of Kesha’s artistic expression, the reenacting of various intimate positions raised questions of whether an 18+ age restriction would have been more appropriate. A slight toning down of the graphic nature would have broadened the show’s appeal.

Kesha showcased her versatility with the upbeat country vibes of “Timber” and then demonstrated her impressive vocal range with powerful, emotional performances of “Praying,” “Hate Me Harder,” and “Delusional.” Her heartfelt commentary about individuality, love and hate added a layer of sincerity, creating a connection with the audience that was reflected in the sea of illuminated phone screens. These were a few rare moments that brought the crowd to a standstill.

While the performances were energetic and engaging, a greater degree of audience interaction, such as acknowledging fan signs or engaging in brief conversations between songs, would have further enhanced the experience. Direct crowd engagement would’ve also given her the opportunity to rest while elongating her set.

The show reached a powerful climax with “We R Who We R,” bringing back the drag queens and incorporating pride flags for a celebratory finale.

Kesha proved herself a genuine and passionate entertainer, fostering a sense of community among the concertgoers. Her connection with her fans is undeniable – “House of Kesha” offered a space for shared celebration. She reciprocated the love and appeared to be having just as much fun. I haven’t felt that much energy in one space in a while.

However, the show’s relatively short duration (under an hour) felt insufficient. Considering the long wait since her last tour and the late start time, a more substantial set, perhaps closer to 90 minutes, would have been a more complete experience.
