On Monday night the illusive King Krule graced the Enmore Theatre, supported by Sydney artist Jonti. It was a phenomenal performance with devoted fans hanging off singer Archy Marshall’s every word and bouncing to the jazz-hip hop fusion. The show was in support of his album release The OOZ, the venue perfectly capturing the feelings of mystery and darkness explored on the album.
First up, Jonti hyped the crowd with a fusion of synth-rock and alternative hip-hop. Their tracks instantly got people moving to the beat. Front man Jonti Danilewriz hypnotised the Enmore Theatre with unique falsetto and bounced around onstage with infectious energy. His loose and hazy vibes perfectly set the stage for King Krule.
Finally the band entered and was greeted with wild applause. When Archy Marshall stepped onstage the audience could barely contain their excitement. He sported casual clothes like he had just walked in off the streets of Newtown. Opening the set with Has This Hit?, the young crowd started moshing and bouncing, despite the reasonably subdued nature of the song.

Dum Surfer plunged the Enmore Theatre into absolute chaos. Marshall threw his slinky body around on stage, his poetic lyrics and aggressive vocals putting the crowd in a haze. The band struggled to keep up with the frantic energy of the venue. A couple of seconds later Marshall announced, “This next song is about a reptile” and launched into A Lizard State. The audience barely had time to recover before they were sent back into a frenzy, the rock and post punk fusion paired with hypnotic saxophone solos ensued mania.
Rock Bottom and Half Man Half Shark proved to be standout moments of the night. King Krule’s passion, energy and raw talent radiated from within him. He was truly incredible to watch, moving sharply onstage while snarling poetic lyrics.
“Big up gay marriage…spread love and unity across this earth”. Off the back of Mardi Gras celebrations, the crowd let loose an ear splitting scream. By this point the night was winding down and Marshall took it back to some of his earliest and most popular work, finishing with Baby Blue and Easy Easy.

The crowd was absolutely determined for an encore, screaming and chanting “one more song” for minutes after the band had left the stage. Finally, King Krule returned with Out Getting Ribs. This last song was emotional and intimate, letting everyone cool down and catch their breath. It was a beautiful way to end the night.
