There is something beautifully uniting about gathering together with like minded music fans to communally share in moments of joy, pleasure, excitement and of an experience that we have sorely missed over recent times. As the suns sets over the towering Melbourne skyline and as punters queue to enter the famous Sidney Myer Music Bowl, there is a sense of expectation that can only be experienced in this unique environment.
With food vans a plenty, beverages flowing and people spreading out on the vast lawns of this natural amphitheatre, anticipation of an exceptional night is almost guaranteed.

Taking to the wide & deep stage is the only support act for this evening, Melbourne locals The Temper Trap.
Playing tunes from all three of their albums saw the band open with a solid version of Thick as Thieves, moving through Love Lost and Trembling Hands. Most of their nine song set consisted of material from the bands debut and most successful album Conditions. There is also something to be said for the choice of a local band (although The Temper Trap have spend a lot of time in London) to support a ‘big’ international act, when it may be in other interest to have international ‘up and coming’ acts tag along on a tour.
As the balmy Melbourne Spring evening unfolds & the pre-show screens include sports-stadium-like roving cameras on screen, enthralling and entertaining punters dancing, gyrating and acting without hesitation as their images are plastered on the huge LED screens.

The stage now been adorned with several large reflective discs, mirrors, screens and risers as the last of the ‘pre-show’ entertainment fades down. As the lights drop, the brothers (and one cousin) from Kings of Leon enter the stage to rapturous applause as the dim, moody light remains for the opening tracks.
Opening with When You See Yourself, Are You Far Away? from the band’s current release, When You See Yourself was promptly followed up on the dark stage with the tracks Slow Night, So Long and King of the Rodeo, both from 2004’s Aha Shake Heartbreak release.
As Kings of Leon progressed and the impressive light show exploded, coupled with breathtaking visuals, they explored tracks from their entire back catalogue, with the exception of Mechanical Bull, which was included on other shows on the When You See Yourself tour.

Fans, while enjoying this greatest hits collection of songs, really came to life as the band entered into the first of one of their ‘big’ hits Use Somebody which has the string of awards attached to it – Best Rock Song and was the award winning album Only by the Night which won Record of The Year.
After a short break the band returned for a three song encore which included Knocked Up, Waste a Moment and the smash hit Sex on Fire.
It was so great to have a large international act back on to our stage, as this now signals the start of what should be a fantastic summer festival season.
