Get ready y’all – Kylie’s gone… country. People may think Madonna is pop’s queen chameleon, yet Kylie Minogue with a costume trunk full of gold pants, showgirl rhinestones, impulse can and now rhinestone jeans, gives the Material Girl a run for her money with Raining Glitter from latest album, Golden.
Interestingly both have tipped their Stetsons to country music but where Madonna played with cowboy motifs and legends, Minogue’s inspiration is rooted in heartbreak and her usual playful pop beats. Raining Glitter, is a more appealing song that first single Dancing and doesn’t take itself too seriously with its sprightly bluegrass guitars and Minogue’s intermittent ‘woots’. However like many country songs, at its core is the pain of heartbreak, specifically the painful break-up of Minogue’s relationship with fiance Joshua Sasse.

This sounds like the song when you aren’t over a relationship but for one night you are going to drink those champagnes, dance, be messy and live in the moment. It makes for a very infectious song but within the spectrum of Kylie songs, it’s one that blends in the middle. If anything, Kylie’s evident homage to country music points to one thing… that the resurgence of Tennessee’s bouffanted, country music icon Dolly Parton is all but two shakes of a lamb’s tail away.
