Who’s ready to feel their hearts burst?

Just when you began to notice a huge void in the music industry, global superstar Lady Gaga is back to save it with none other than surprise movie star Bradley Cooper. The two stars have joined forces to release their first single Shallow off the soundtrack for their co-starring film A Star Is Born, out 5th October 2018. As snippets of Shallow have been circulating throughout the social realm for months since the movie trailer dropped, Shallow was the obvious choice for the films lead single. Lady Gaga rose to immense worldwide success in 2008 with her debut single Just Dance, along with her debut studio album The Fame. Since then, the Grammy winner has followed her success with three more studio albums, as well as a Golden Globe award for her role in television hit show American Horror Story. However, despite his blockbuster cinema successes, A Star Is Born is just the beginning for Bradley’s musical potential.

The instrumental for this track is both simple yet effective. The track begins with a live crowd cheering as if you’re listening to a bootleg from a real concert, as well as strums from an acoustic guitar. Bradley supports his vocals perfectly with the breathtaking intro as my ears were instantly glued to each word the actor was singing. When Lady Gaga begins singing in the second verse, you hear an uproar once again from the crowd and you can feel the energy instantly as if you’re actually at a concert watching her perform. The instrumental then becomes bolder with the addition of the piano. As the track begins to transition into powerhouse vocals between the bridge and the last chorus, the instrumental progresses into a full band with the heaviness of the drum kit, immaculately supporting the duo’s vocals at the end of the track.

“Tell me something boy,

Aren’t you tired tryin’ to fill that void?”

.

The lyrics of this track focus on strength and fear. Bradley opens the song as a conversation starter asking Lady Gaga a question. He asks the starlet if she’s happy in the world she’s living in or if she’s searching for something more to fulfil her. Lady Gaga then answers back to Bradley with a more serious tone as she sings with the question of whether he’s tired keeping up appearances and not dealing with his struggles. The duo then belt the chorus out together as if their lives depends on it. Lady Gaga stated in an interview with Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio that the track is about “two people talking to each other about the need and the drive to dive into the deep end and stay away from the shallow area.”  I also need to shed a light on Lady Gaga’s vocal performance on the bridge of this track because it is literally breathtaking, you can feel each note within your body giving you chills.

All I can say is, I can smell the Oscar nominations building up for what will not only be an incredible soundtrack, but an outstanding film. As if it wasn’t surprising enough that Bradley had some pipes on him and not just mediocre pipes, actual good vocals. The chemistry between both stars within this ballad is rippling on the skin to say the least. After listening to it over and over again, you can just feel the genuine emotion and rawness given from both parties. Lady Gaga has proven once again why she’s stayed atop as one of the biggest stars on this planet for a decade now. It’s not just about her talent and her voice, but it’s about her delivery and boy does she deliver in Shallow. Everybody grab a tissue and watch the music video down below, this small snippet of what’s to come for A Star Is Born will without a doubt leave you restless for more.
