This California-based electro-pop trio consisting of Paul Klein, (Lead vocals, Keyboard, Guitar). Les Priest, (Keyboards, Guitar, Backup vocals), and Jake Goss, (Drums, Roland SPD-SX) played an array of headline shows across the world in 2017. Continuing their roll of sold out shows, LANY took to Melbourne, playing their second sold-out Australian show for this leg of their 2018 “For the world” tour. I was lucky enough to snag a ticket to their show at Melbourne’s extravagant Recital Centre. Having arrived at the venue shortly before doors opened, I was impressed to see many fans had gotten to the venue hours early despite the Recital Centre being a seated venue.

The night kicked off with a bang, as Sydney band GLADES, performed their opening set. A perfect way to begin the night. Getting everyone hyped with their loud alternative electro-pop music. If given the chance definitely go see these guys live. I’m calling it now, they’re going to be HUGE!!!
When it was finally time for LANY to take stage, we were greeted to an impressive lighting display before the band swiftly transitioned into their first songs of the night, ‘Dumb Stuff’. Paul came bounding out of the wings and hit his mark with no time to spare before the lyrics kicked in. Paul made it known that this was only the second show the boys have ever played to a seated venue, and he requested we disregard the chairs and fly over them to congregate at the front of the venue in GA fashion. With these instructions given to fans by the singer himself, security didn’t know what to do with themselves as waves of girls jumped the seats to be closer to the trio.

During ‘Made In Hollywood’ front man Paul jumped into crowd and powered through the crowd, walking across the venues arm-rests. Understandably so the whole audience, and notably, the bands crew, were a bit shocked by the singer’s decision to venture that far into the crowd. Once Paul was back on his feet on stage they trio continued the show with tracks ‘It Was Love’ and then the danceable fan favourite ‘Hurts’. This upbeat anthem had everyone dancing and singing along. At this stage I wondered whether the band could keep up this energy.
With little to no breaks in between songs, the band moved through their set in what felt like a heartbeat. After seeing such overwhelming support for this band in such a small amount of time it becomes strange to think that only a few months ago that the band were playing the Max Watts venue across town.

The end of the set was a blur. The lights. The screams. The abundance of roses. It was really something wonderful. The party rounded out with the bands hits ‘Super Far’ and ‘Parents’ & of course, ‘ILSYB’. Paul was so thankful to us for allowing a small band from California to travel the world doing what they love. It was a beautifully emotional way to end the night. One of the strangest, wildest, most wonderful gigs of my life. Overall this show felt like a dream. Like something from a teen movie. Get on-board with LANY before they blow up beyond belief, and trust me. Its coming.
