Leon Bridges Brings Soul to Brisbane

Walking toward Brisbane’s Riverstage last night, I was a little worried. The rain had been coming down all day, and I wasn’t sure if we were in for a soggy, grey evening. But, like magic, as Leon Bridges’ set time rolled around, the skies decided to settle.

The vibe at Riverstage was laid back but the production was moody. Golden lights illuminated these long draped curtains, and out stepped Leon Bridges in a long sleeve button-up and crisp white pants. Just like that, the crowd was buzzing.

It’s been three years since Leon’s last visit to Australia, and it felt like his artistry had grown exponentially in that time. His latest self-titled album, Leon, dives deep into his childhood in Fort Worth, Texas, and you could feel his personal experiences referenced into every track.

I was surprised to see the crowd was a mix of ages, with older fans swaying alongside younger ones. It struck me how Leon’s music brings people together.

He opened with “When a Man Cries.” His voice sounded rich, velvety, and full of emotion. Leon Bridges blends soul, folk, and country into one.

The next track is my personal favourite, “Panther City.” I feel a deep connection to his storytelling. It’s a love letter to his Texas roots, and the smooth rhythm had me singing along with the crowd. No, honestly. I have “in the summertime, it’s alright” stuck in my head for the past twenty-four hours.

One thing that stood out was his band. Every musician on that stage was exceptional, but I have to give a special shoutout to his backup vocalists, especially Emily. Her riffs during tracks like “Flowers” and “Better Man” were nothing short of stunning. She added so much depth to the performance, and it felt like their voices worked together well.

The setlist was a dream. He balanced his older hits with tracks from his newer material beautifully. Classics like “Coming Home” and “River” had the crowd erupting into cheers, while collaborations such as “Mariella” and “Texas Sun”originally performed with Khruangbin brought a breezy, psychedelic vibe that felt perfect for the open-air venue.

The encore was something truly special. The lights dimmed, and Leon returned to the stage solo with his guitar. It was just him, his voice, and the crowd. He performed “Lisa Sawyer” and “Beyond,” and I’ll admit, I got a little emotional. There was something so raw and intimate about those moments. His music, his stories, his energy, it’s all so real.
