Who’s ready for some rhythm and sass?

Power girl group Little Mix are back with a bang with their new track Woman Like Me featuring Nicki Minaj, which will serve as the lead single to their upcoming fifth studio album. The four divas blew up social media the past two weeks by posting various snippets and teasers, leaving fans with a feeling of excitement that this lead single was to be like no other. Over the years the group have also expressed their desire to collaborate with Nicki and the moment has finally arrived. Little Mix rose to fame on the X Factor in 2011 by being the first group ever to win the competition. Since then, they’ve mastered world domination and women empowerment through the success of their last four major hit studio albums. Nicki on the other hand has been creating massive waves through 2018 with the release of her fourth studio album Queen in August, which features her hit song Bed featuring Ariana Grande.

The instrumental to this track takes you on quite a rollercoaster. We see the track start with a simple one string kind of tempo that almost makes the instrumental unnoticeable. As the track progresses to the pre-chorus, there’s a dance type drop that gives the track serious energy and flavour. As we get to the chorus, the instrumental goes back to that one string sound and then eventually builds and builds until we get to that anticipated drop at the end of the chorus. The beat reminds me of their sound from their Glory Days album, especially their track Down & Dirty as the beat, structure and sensual aura are quite similar. The changing instrumental throughout the track from soft to bold helps with the message of the track as it puts more emphasis and focus on particular lyrics.

The lyrics to this track touch on themes of truth and love. As Little Mix are very well recognised for their attention to feminism, this song does not lack from that passion. In Woman Like Me, the girls sing about how their honesty, mistakes and insecurities shown to the world over the course of their fame is who they truly are. As they desire a man that they’re infatuated with, they wonder whether they could fall for them after all the light that has been shed on them over the last seven years of their careers. An extreme likeable trait about each song the girls release is that each member has unique, recognisable vocals that really puts them into character and belief that the lyrics they are portraying are real. Their huge advantage is that all girls can really sing, so the vocal runs and high notes are never in short supply and Woman Like Me once again brings out their vocal talent.

When you have a track written by mega superstars Jess Glynne and Ed Sheeran, it’s kind of inevitable that Woman Like Me is going to be another smash hit single for Little Mix. It’s a fun, sexy pop song that could get any party started, but also don’t forget that the truthful lyrics really do put the girls on a highly respected pedestal. As Nicki uses her star power to place that cherry on top of a great track, she supports the girls’ message by also highlighting the fact that she is who she is given her past, just like the girls. It’s a long awaited collaboration we didn’t know we needed as its speak for itself attitude will definitely get your car radio pumping from start to finish.
