In these times when feelings of cabin fever is a common experience for most people during the last 18 months of the pandemic, Maggie Slater’s new single “Itchy Feet” is incredibly relevant and relatable. The single is a whimsical and soaring song about the malaise we feel returning home to our normal lives after being in a new place experiencing new adventures.

Slater is currently based out of Melbourne but had previously split her time in Far North Queensland where she’s originally from. However, travel at this point is a tenuous thing when you are trying to get further than your city limits. Slater unpacks the feeling of that sense of longing with “Itchy Feet”. It’s not uncommon to go through a period of pursuing new places and then feeling lost when you return to your mundane everyday life. “Crashed landed, step off the plane to the weight of the air and the world on my shoulders”.

The song glows with the luminosity of indie-rock and pop-punk with its drifting guitars which give way to the tempestuous drums come the chorus which expresses the joy Slater felt on her travels as she sings “I wanna feel alive”. Slater’s voice is delicate but there is also an edge of melancholy that permeates the song with a sense of angst. For Slater exploring the trials of a young woman who is moving into the realities of adulthood is a source of motivation, and with “Itchy Feet” she muses eloquently about her longing to ultimately find a place she belongs.

This new single is the first from Slater’s upcoming EP “Live at DREADSOUND Studios” and “Itchy Feet” has that identifiable organic indie sound that only comes from a live performance. Check it out when it’s released on the 9th July because Slater is one of those unique unicorns whose voice can comfort even as she sings about her internal struggles.
