Smooth-singing serenader Mako Bron is back with his newest single ‘Sideways,’ a song that sounds like it was plucked straight out of an iconic 90’s rom-com. The single follows the release of his debut EP ‘Mirror Mirror’ with its catchy existentialist single ‘Something Always,’ and follows on with his signature creative style: the contrasting musical sound and lyrical message. Mako Bron has a talent for creating musical experiences that are fun to listen to but make you realise that the meaning behind the lyrics goes much deeper.

‘Sideways’ begins with an introduction of drums and electronic synth instruments that paint the picture of a musical fusion between 70’s psychedelic rock, disco and 2000’s indie music. The melody is bright and lighthearted, the funky beat will have any listener bobbing their head along and wishing they had a pair of roller skates and a roller rink to skate along to the song,  The instrumental is stripped back to introduce Mako Bron’s vocals gently yet passionately singing the verse. Mako Bron’s vocals have a unique tone that fills you with a feeling of comfort and warmth, no matter what he’s singing about. The clear and crisp yet reassuring tone of his vocals would allow him to sing a grocery list and it’ll be a hit single.

“And I go sideways with you, there’s nothing left to do”

Looking past the bright and cheerful facade, the lyrics to ‘Sideways’ hide a meaning that is confronting and causes the listener to sympathise with the anonymous protagonist of the song. Mako Bron admits that ‘Sideways’ was inspired by the helpless desire of a close friend to support a family member struggling with mental illness. The lyrics depict the struggle and internal conversations that the individual has in regards to trying to help the afflicted; the ‘should I?, shouldn’t I?’ metaphorical tiptoeing around the situation. Mako Bron has a unique ability to delicately paint a rising concern and bring it into the light of mainstream media.

Mako Bron has an undeniable talent for creating engaging and interesting music with lyrics that shatter your idea of reality and encourage introspection and for you to pay closer attention to the world around you. ‘Sideways’ is easy to listen to, but will open your eyes to a whole new perspective if you follow the meaning behind its lyrics.
