If you like your psychedelic rock brace yourself when you listen to Marty K & The Electric Hurricanes’ explosive debut single, “Rattle Snakes & Bones”. The song is a raw homage to desert rock and blues with hefty guitars, thunderous drums and vocals that lilt like on a breeze.
“Rattle Snakes & Bones” is the culmination of Melbourne guitarist and producer Marty K’s extensive music production and touring. Having played in numerous bands over the years, he’s had the opportunity to play support to legends like The Living End, Nathan Cavaleri & Juke Kartel as well as playing on the same festival bill of icons Aerosmith, Richie Ramone and Van Halen. Marty K has taken that experience and, with a few mates who hold all specialised talents, created his band The Electric Hurricanes.

Immediately in “Rattle Snakes & Bones” you can hear the breadth of experience radiating from the song. On first listen there is a bold brashness to the track which has that expansive, laconic rhythm that is so ubiquitous to desert rock. However, gazing into the composition reveals that there is a lot to unpack from the song. Rosa Rico’s vocals are breezy upon introduction but as the song climbs her timbre becomes edgy and defiant. The guitars which drive the song like a strong heartbeat embrace a classic 60s psychedelic sound that becomes really boisterous in the chorus. The song ambles at such an unhurried pace that it almost has a hypnotic affect. “I wanted to give it [Rattle Snakes & Bones] a loose feel, a throwback to the 70s and to capture the spirit and excitement of that spontaneity.” For Marty K, composing means exploring different aspects of his guitar playing and it certainly shows.
As a debut single “Rattle Snakes & Bones” is less like a meal and more like an amuse-bouche for Marty K & The Electric Hurricanes. It’s a moorish taster of what is to come, given that Marty K has been working on more material to release in the future. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for the next course.
