“MCP have a knack for creating songs that are layered and cinematic in their ambition.”

From one of Sydney’s most fascinating electronic outfits comes their new single which is another mind melter. The three-piece MCP has made it their mission with their new single “The Nothing” to transport you to another world that is futuristically dystopian and twisted.

“The Nothing” has those cyber-element motifs that intrigue MCP and makes them one of the more interesting progressive-electronic outfits around at the moment. They are deeply invested in the production of their tracks, creating music that is meant to be a vessel to transport the listener to an otherworldly place. You can hear the mid-80s electronic-synth influence so reminiscent of movies like The Dark Crystal and Wizard of Oz 2 reverberate through the track especially as it builds to an uneasy crescendo. It’s little surprise to discover the apprehensive song was created during the peak of the global pandemic last year.

However, if you want to get the full effect of the song, then you have to watch the accompanying music video. If you think “The Nothing” sounds trippy just wait until you watch the music video. It’s a wild music video that was conceived after the group stumbled upon a jar of “Free Weed” during a trip through the back streets of Newtown on their way to a sushi bar. That special find was the inspiration not only for the creation of “The Nothing” but the subsequent video which was fleshed out by Arron Millikin. The animation is an intoxicating interstellar space of hyper colour and movement with a little tongue-in-cheek satire. Featuring sonic space ships and a massive fleet of iPhone earpods hellbent on destruction it feels like a psychedelic dream.  Watch it with your headphones on and fall down the rabbit hole.

MCP have a knack for creating songs that are layered and cinematic in their ambition. “The Nothing” follows this lead combining distorted audio with a whimsical synth line that is counterbalanced by an insistent commanding drum track. The overall result is a track that with their previous releases like “Vantablack” adds another dimension to the universe that MCP has been constructing.

“Watch it with your headphones on and fall down the rabbit hole.”
