Michael Brinkworth’s new album Wasted Wonder a stellar showcase of songwriting

‘[One More Time (Just For Fun)] is one of those tracks which immediately offers you rewarding catharsis as soon as you hit play. It’s not all too often you’ll get to hear that from a breaking artist.’ – Amanda Vandergast, A&R Factory

‘You can feel the sun beaming through the song!’ – Craig Quartermaine on Good Old Feeling,
 ABC Radio Australia

King of Indecision is ‘…a richly layered and ambitious song” that “brings to mind Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-era Wilco in the way the song unravels and collapses into a collage of distorted sound, echoing the despair of the lyrics’
 – Andrew Frolish, Americana UK

Michael Brinkworth is a worldly singer/songwriter who has travelled through different locales composing and performing with a swag of songs in tow. He’s toured all solidly through Europe and in 2017 released his well-received debut album, Somewhere To Run From. Today, Brinkworth is opening up his swag once more to pull out some pearlers with the first offering being the new single “Thick Skin”, a sparkling song that imbibes a sense of hope and will have you humming to yourself.

Now this Australian might be based in Berlin but he still exudes a quintessential laconic Aussie vibe. “Thick Skin” is the lead single from his upcoming new album “Wasted Wonder” (to be released 21st May) which embraces the rhythm of country rock and alt-indie guitars and would feel right at home at your local live venue pub.

“Thick Skin” is an alt-folk song that is drenched in whimsical c’est la vie. Featuring a welcoming guitar intro, Brinkworth muses on the hard challenges of being a working musician whilst trying to nurture his creative process.

“To the next song, I hope can I write. I never know what’s gonna happen. I just got to keep up the fight.”

It’s an all too familiar feeling that musicians go through and for some, there would be a sense of bitterness but Brinkworth reminds himself he has the strength to push through the obstacles even if at times it doesn’t feel like that. “Thick Skin” is a charming song with a hopeful sentiment that will lay down the themes that Wasted Wonder will delve into.

There are shades of the lyricism of Paul Kelly, and Brinkworth’s inspirations of Wilco and The Band are also apparent. The rhythm of “Thick Skin” is unhurried with pianos, guitars, drums and horns flourishing the song along with a contemplative harmonica bridge. The culminating result is a song that is perfect for a long drive on a warm afternoon and one that will stay with you long after your journey.

‘Thick Skin’ will be in Digital Stores
on the 23rd of April

‘Wasted Wonder’ by Michael Brinkworth is out May 21st
