Mister Co.’s “Can’t Stop The Funk” struts in with the confidence of wearing flares to a night out and pulling it off. The Melbourne duo have collaborated with Jonathan Bufalino and Free Parking to deliver a track that’s bold, brassy and absolutely here to get you dancing. From the first slap of the bass, it’s clear that Mister Co. didn’t come to play, they came to funk things up.
Let’s start with the good, the groove is undeniable. Connor and Oscar Absolum are clearly knee-deep in their Parliament-era fantasies, and it pays off. Slathered in bass slaps, wah-wah guitar twangs and a brass section that sounds like it’s had three espresso shots, the track brims with 1970s fabulousness filtered through the vibe of a Melbourne warehouse party.
Jonathan Buffalino and Free Parking guest spot as valuable players. Their delivery cooks up a funky stew that’s equal parts retro homage and soul revival. The production is lush and busy, but largely well-balanced, there’s a lot going on, but it all works to keep you locked in. It’s the kind of track you can picture popping off live, maybe it’s time to get those tickets to check them out at Homegrown At Howler in August.

Vocals bounce along with a cheeky energy exuding charm and collective joy. The chorus has that sweet call-and-response flavour destined for crowd sing-a-longs and dancefloor grins. And while the lyrics don’t dig too deep, that’s not really the point. This is a celebration of groove, connection, and that unspoken moment when the beat hits and everyone’s shoulders start moving in sync.
With “Can’t Stop The Funk” Mister Co. manage to hold their own by doubling down on community, collaboration, and sheer good vibes. It’s an tasty slice of music that will likely become festival fuel, a crowd-pleaser and with its shimmy and swagger, Mister Co. have us asking eagerly, “What’s next?”.
