Roads Uncharted is the debut album of the Dutch alternative metal band Mountain Eye, who formed in 2017. In 2018 Mountain Eye toured Belgium and the Netherlands in their ‘Take Control’ tour, during this time they ended up winning the Battle of Hox band battle. Their debut album Roads Uncharted was released on 28 January 2019.

With this album, the band wishes to make alternative metal accessible to larger audiences and to fill the gap that nu-metal bands in the 2000’s left behind. Being a metal fan myself, I was excited to give this album a listen as finding new bands that pave their own way in music is hard to come across.

On my first round listening to Roads Uncharted, I couldn’t help but notice how each song would flow nicely into the next one, whilst ensuring that each song  had their own defined sound making them recognisable to the listener. As I kept listening their guitar riffs, gripping vocals and lyrics had me hooked on each song, they still contained the same nu-metal sound that bands before them had paved but they still managed to tweak the sound and make it their own.

For this review I am going to focus on three of my top track picks from this album ‘Misery’, ‘Black Flood’ and ‘Verge’.

‘Misery’ is the opening track for Roads Uncharted and it pulls you with its smooth start and vocals singing softly as the band slowly builds up, before kicking in full force at the chorus. This is a strong track to kick off the album, and probably my favourite as it contains everything an alternative metal song could as for killer vocals,  strong and catchy riffs with an excellent drummer to back it up and tie it all in.

‘Back Flood’ is one of their heavier tracks of the album, and definitely a song I would head bang to if I ever saw them live. As all good heavy songs it starts off with strong hefty guitar riffs and a vocal growl, it’s the type of song you can channel all of your anger into and feel the slightest bit of relief afterwards.

‘Verge’ comes on straight after ‘Black Flood’ and with a good reason too, it’s another epic song filled with heavy riffs (a basic necessity in this type of genre) and enthralling vocals. The lyrics are spat out fast but clear before flowing into the chorus – which slows the song down before speeding up again in the second verse, this would have to be my second favourite track of the album.

‘Roads Uncharted’ is a solid debut album, giving fans of alternate metal an insight of what is to become of Mountain Eye in the near future if they continue to grow and break the alternative/nu metal stigma that most bands have moulded to.
