Nothing But Thieves hit the stage in all black matching ensembles greeter by the roar of a crowd unsettlingly large in contrast to the fragile demeanour of the iconic Forum Theatre in Melbourne. The band pounced straight into their opening track ‘I Was Just A Kid’.

The energy I the room was electric, seeing so many people jumping around with smiled plastered across their faces immensely brightened my mood (I was quite ill).

Transitioning from song-to song seamlessly the first 20 minutes of the set seemed so surreal. It wasn’t until frontman Conor Mason piped up to let everyone know how he had eaten one too many dumplings in Chinatown earlier & was feeling the need for a little vomit that the movie-like scene was shattered. The crowd all laughed at Conor’s comment as he went on to say “Its been two years since we were last here, playing a much smaller venue down the road”. The crowd erupted with support for the band as they continued through their high energy set.

I was blown away by the stage presence and showmanship exuded by frontman Conor Mason. The vocal skill portrayed is beyond compare. Hitting every single note, and trust me there are some crazy tough riffs in there, I was undoubtedly impressed.

Once again pumping through hits from their albums I was honoured to be in a room with thousands of people experiencing, and sharing in this performance.

A sea of heads jumping up and down during the track ‘Ban The Music’. The crown began clapping enthusiastically in unison along to the beat right before drummer James Price erupted into an epic drum solo.

During the bands brief exit from stage in preparation for their encore, the crowd began singing the iconic song ‘Hey Baby’, if you’ve ever been to a concert in Australia you will find nothing unusual about that. However I found it quite funny that hen when band returned to stage for their final songs Conor asks, “I love that song! Is that the Australian national anthem?” obviously joking, but humorous nonetheless.

Closing the show with the smash hit ‘Amsterdam’ the entirety of the venue were giving it all they had. People on shoulders waving their limbs erratically were seen all around. It was clear how much fun everyone was having. As elated as I was after their brilliant performance, I was understandably sad the moment the final notes played. This was is. Until next time NBT. I can’t wait. Literally.
