Japanese band, One Ok Rock, began their Australian tour Monday night in Adelaide. Eager fans lined up so far down the street that I didn’t recognise the shops next to us. Some fans were still coming inside from that same lineup nearly an hour after doors. The show had sold out only a couple hours before the night began.
.
.
Stateside were the first band up and already playing to a massive crowd from the start of the night. The female fronted four piece have recently played shows with Simple Plan, With Confidence, Palaye Royale, All Time Low and many other cool bands. Stateside covered Mantra by Bring Me The Horizon as the crowd cheered. Fans were yelling the words of This Is War back to the band on stage and the crowd cheered loudly after each song they played. Stage lights flashed as Stateside played and jumped around the stage. Vocalist Erin told the crowd that they had some trouble releasing their new song before this tour but they would still play it last. “You guys can help us out, the word is low” she exclaimed as Hamish began with some stick hits on the drums. He continued to bash away; the crowd yelled the words back and launched into clapping along to the breakdown. The pop punk band left the stage after their 30 minute set still jumping around and with the promise of seeing fans at the merch stand.
.
.
First time touring Australia, Set It Off were playing next. With a mix of electronic music and punk riffs, Set It Off have a unique pop sound and recently released their new album After Midnight. The stage darkened as the crowd cheered and a countdown from 10 began before ‘Welcome to Midnight’ was voiced over the backing track. The lights came on as we saw Zach and Maxx move around the stage. They started the night with Lonely Dance as Set It Off jumped around. The band begged everyone to jump up, but they were already jumping around and enjoying their set. Hands in the air, arms swinging along to the tunes, loud cheering during every vocal break. Set It Off were giving the crowd an awesome first Australian show.
.
.
Maxx sat cross-legged as the start of Hypnotized began without drums before he started smashing around and hitting all the drums. Maxx was so energetic as he mouthed the words of every song, head banged along and was just smiling the whole set. Cody asked the fans to dance as he began Bleak December. “I know you can jump, I know you can yell but can you dance?”
Cody got on the keyboard halfway through No Disrespect, then asked everyone to put their arms around the person next to them as we all jump to the left, then the right, repeat. Almost the whole room jumped along and did everything he told them. Cody told the room to scream and they screamed.
.
.
I heard someone excitedly yell ‘omg it’s this song’ as the backing track gave us Dancing With The Devil. Cody and Zach held up devil horns to their heads as they sung the words. Set It Off played Killer In The Mirror next before Cody jumped onto the barrier and fell into a crowd surf, singing every word into the mic.
Why Worry goes out to anyone who’s had a tough 2020 so far; listen closely to the lyrics. They finished the show with Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing.
‘We could not have asked for a better crowd for our first Australian tour’

Finally One Ok Rock braced the stage; or One Okay Rock as it says on the set times postered around the walls. The four piece Japanese rock group are touring Australia in support for their new album, Eye Of The Storm, released last month. A single guitar strum made the crowd go crazy as they walked onto the stage and began their set. The lights turned on and so many phones were held up high to see the stage. Fans screamed even louder as vocalist Taka walked out and began singing Eye of the Storm. They started the second song, Never Let This Go, as the whole room jumped to the music.
Hands flew in the air as fans sung We Are, before Taka sung the second verse in Japanese. Toru played the guitar solo right on the barrier as fans screamed back to him. During Take What You Want, arms swung to the beat of the kick drum. Taka held the longest ‘go’ while fans cheered then sung along to the last chorus.
.
.
Taka had some soft vocals for the start of Head High. A few people held their phone flashes and others swung their arms to the slower beat. The stage lights flashed crazy for the drums at the end of Grow Old Die Young, before the sudden stop finish. There was a long build up before Taka said ‘I wanna see you fucking mooooove’ and One Ok Rock played Change. This was an obvious crowd favourite, as well as The Beginning, which they played later in the night.
I Was King slowed down to the breakdown with only drums while fans yelled and sung every word ‘if I go down I will go down fighting’. One Ok Rock brought in an acoustic guitar for Be The Light; there were cameras out for filming and arms swinging in the air as the room sang the words back. All band members sung the opening vocals to Push Back before the crowd joined in. The band jumped around the stage and flicked their hair to the music they played.
.
.
After playing for 70 minutes, One Ok Rock thanked everyone for coming. Clapping, screaming and whistling echoed throughout the room before the band exited. Chanting encore, clapping along, cheering, chanting one more song and again chanting encore; the band finally came back to the stage. The entire room yelled the words of Wasted Nights back to the band and they cheered for the longest time as One Ok Rock finally left the stage at the end of the night. Almost all of the tour is sold out so make sure you grab a ticket to another show while you still can!
