Global citizen Oshua dived into music during the lockdown and his influences of Juice WRLD, Mac Miller and Lil Uzi Vert are revealed in his latest EP “Everything Can Levitate”. The Australian-based artist who has been cosigned by Young Thug and Denzel Curry, weaves a tapestry of introspective lyrics bolstered by a banging production that is impressive for someone who is only three years deep in the game.

Field Trip
Opening with a smooth bassline, “Field Trip” is a compelling sonic journey that seamlessly blends contemporary hip-hop with elements of pop and R&B. The production elements of the track are highly finessed, featuring a dynamic mix of atmospheric synths, punchy basslines, and crisp percussion. The song opens with a hypnotic melodic progression, creating an immersive backdrop for the drone of Oshua’s vibrant bars. As the track progresses, the production evolves, incorporating intricate beat switches and layers that add depth and texture. Seamlessly integrating these elements is a killer way to kick off “Everything Can Levitate”.

Samurais n Shoguns
Wasting no time to get into it, Oshua flexes his ability to create a distinctive sonic atmosphere. The track features a hazy, psychedelic soundscape characterised by a ticking beat, moody basslines and distorted synths, perfectly complementing Oshua’s thematic exploration of fluid creative expression. The production incorporates unconventional beats and rhythmic patterns, creating a disorienting yet captivating track with a simmering darkness. Oshua layers on the textures, enhancing the dreamlike quality of the music. The meticulous arrangement of production elements makes “Samurais n Shoguns” go down like a smooth cognac.
One of 1
By One of 1, Oshua’s influences begin to show. Having dived into music production and songwriting while in lockdown a few years ago through Discord, the young artist’s tastes are broad and thoroughly kissed by 80s 8-bit nostalgia, analogue synths and contemporary trap beats. Focussing on his journey as an artist and his drive to make music like letting a ‘genie out of a bottle’, his lyrics glow with a theme of self-discovery and this will get you hooked.

.
Liu Kang
“Liu Kang” a nod to a gaming icon in Mortal Kombat continues Oshua’s bump to internet influences. The song navigates a contemporary blend of hip-hop and pop, its production and is straightforward in its approach. The track leans heavily on trap-inspired beats, with a minimalistic arrangement of synth elements and percussion dominating the sound. It has mainstream appeal but while undeniably catchy, “Liu Kang” doesn’t venture far from stylised conventions of pop rap and at just under two and half minutes it merely skims the surface.

Break for Hammer
Taking it down a gear the sonic palette of “Break for Hammer” revolves around polished instrumentation and a meticulously focussed bassline. It’s the closest to a ballad you’ll get on ‘Everything Can Levitate’ and is a chance for Oshua to show some light and shade. This is a broad stroke that adds to Oshua’s overall composition which a creation of layered textures that vibrate with melancholy and self-reflection. This track shines as a well-crafted addition to the EP, offering a sound that will resonate with lovers of modern rap.
Weightless
Opening with “But I love him” Oshua isn’t afraid of being vulnerable. In “Weightless” he delivers an emotionally charged track. The production pulses with its melancholic yet captivating atmosphere, blending haunting piano melodies with dynamic use of trap-influenced beats. The integration of Oshua’s emotive vocals into the instrumental arrangement creates a poignant synergy. The track’s strength lies in its ability to evoke raw sentiment, allowing the lyrics to take centre stage. While the overall composition is compelling, a touch more sonic diversity could elevate it further.
.
.
Veins
Like waking up from a dream Oshua focus becomes clear-eyed with “Veins” with its trap-infused beat, delivering a succinct emotional punch. The production flaunts thumping bass, providing a fitting canvas for Oshua’s introspective lyricism. The track’s strength lies in its ability to glide with a calming groove (another nod to the EP’s title), as the production cleverly juxtaposes the sombre theme with an infectious rhythm. This deals with the internal battles he faces as his worldview becomes distorted by the discourse of the internet.
Mario in Wonderland
Finishing off in simmering fashion, “Mario in Wonderland” encapsulates how Oshua perceives his place in the world. He has suggested that rather than adhering to one musical style, he’s opened himself up to utilising the nuances between genres. It’s why most of this album is slickly produced and has flashes of familiarity without ever coming off as imitation.
“Everything Can Elevate” belies Oshua’s young age with the album reflecting a very mature approach. Given his growing popularity, Oshua has positioned himself nicely in the pocket of an up-and-comer to keep your eye on.
