Soft Rain is undoubtedly the highlight and stand-out track from Peter Senior’s debut album On The Edge. It contains all the elements of this Australian singer-songwriter’s trademark style yet utilises a more reflective and thoughtful lyric than some of his previous single releases.
The track is an impressive retro-pop song that pays homage to yesteryear without becoming a cheap pastiche version of those classic, evergreen tunes of the past. But there is also an invigorating freshness about the track, perhaps stemming from the immediacy of the sound, the big, bold production and Peter’s indelible voice. His crooning is self-assured, with just a hint of irony but tempered with a seriousness which is reflected in the ingenuity of the melodic and lyrical properties of the song.
It begins with a piano intro that sets up the mood for what’s to come, not quite melancholic but certainly contemplative, ruminative. What follows is a luscious sounding nod to those grand songs that have hooks, thoughtful structure and outstanding performances. Not content to have a standard arrangement, each section in this song seems to organically grow from the preceding part, building all the way to the end of the track, with Peter’s final words, ‘it’s just a soft rain falling down my face’, introducing a final element into the song, that of confession.
The song’s subject matter is reflected beautifully in the arrangement and the production; the rural life versus the city life, the indescribable connection to the land and to place. There is sure to be no shortage of radio stations across the country jumping on this track, it has a big beating heart that intones feelings of hope and faith, longing and kinship. It’s replete with clever melodies and comes alive with Peter’s entreating and commanding vocal performance at the helm.
