Tonight, the first of two sold out shows at Melbourne’s iconic Forum, plays host to one of the most influential alt-rock bands of all time – Pixies.
After being forced to leave Australia, due to the pandemic, and after only one Melbourne show, Pixies have finally made it back to our shore to pick up where they left off.
Head lined as the Come On Pilgrim…It’s Surfer Rosa tour, would see the band cover their 1987 EP Come On Pilgrim and 1988’s debut full-length album, Surfer Rosa.

Opening as the only support were Sydney-siders Body Type, who blasted through an energetic thirty minute set to engage the punters and warm their feet.
After a short recess, Pixies took to the stage, lit only in a wash of lowlight in green, opened with Gouge Away and Wave of Mutilation from their Doolittle record, followed by an exceptional version of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s Head On.

Black Francis was in fine voice accompanied by Kim Deal replacement, Paz Lenchantin on bass, who did a beautiful job of not only covering the bass parts from the Pixies’ extensive back catalogue, but held down wonderful vocal duties when required.
Moving through tunes predominantly off the Doolittle album and featuring four new tracks from the current Doggerel record, it was little strange that there were only two tracks from Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa. Strange in the fact that the tour was billed as playing these two records in their entirety, but really weren’t featured that much? But you know what, no one cared in the slightest, gauging but the crowd participation and singing along to the hits – Monkey Gone To Heaven, Here Comes Your Man, Gigantic and Debaser.

.
Fans were also treated to both version of Wave of Mutilation and the night finished with a Neil Young cover Winterlong before exiting the stage briefly.
Returning for one encore tune, Planet of Sound from the Trompe le Monde album, had the crowd in a grateful frenzy, thankful for an exceptional performance.
This punter for one is looking forward to their return already.
