In Plasma Chasms’ new single “Time Bandit” the band grapple with the feeling of miscommunication and dives into the murky depths of what gives our lives meaning. Sounding like a kaleidoscope swirl of brightly jewelled colours, the neo-psych song gives us an insight into this relatively new band’s creative motivation before the release of their upcoming EP.
Plasma Chasms is the brainchild of Aussie Jane Drewett and American Adrian Guerrero formed in 2020 and based out of Los Angeles the duo brought their experiences that span across the hemispheres together to produce a song that sounds ubiquitously like an indie-Australian song and yet also exudes a strong So-Cal vibe. “Time Bandit” mixes many subtle elements into the production creating this airy, psychedelic journey that veers from classic indie-pop with a retro twist and then to lo-fi psych-rock. The overall effect is a deliciously indulgent song that ebbs and flows with a peaceful and easy feeling.

If Aussie groups like Tame Impala, Methyl Ethel and Dope Lemon jammed out with Americans The Dead Kennedys and The Flaming Lips you would get a fusion of music that would sound like “Time Bandit”. The hallucinogenic vibe of the song plays well into the subtle changes in style and tempo that alludes to the fluid manipulation and interpretation of time. That might seem a lot to digest from a song, but Plasma Chasms make it all sound so inviting with its mellow rhythm and catchy melody. This is pop music that is immediately likeable and enduringly charming suggesting that the Oz-Atlantic partnership was a good move by the duo.
“Time Bandit” will make its debut on Friday the 12th of August with their self-titled EP to be released on Friday the 9th of September. So check it out if you are looking for a fresh sound just in time to welcome in Spring.
