2018 is a new dawn and a new day the band we’ve come to know as The Moorditj Brothers.

The new era begins with not so much a name change, but a shift in the name’s emphasis. Beloved and characterised for two years now by the Noongar word Moorditj (meaning ‘good, solid or deadly’), out of respect for the people and the culture and with a focus on the music itself the band are now known as The MoreDidge Brothers.

With recent shows and festival appearances in January and the release of Royal Tea looking good in February/March, 2018 has started well and promises new and busy times for this band especially when they head to Europe in July/August.

Amnplify caught up with the band recently for a brief chat.

.

.

Before we get into your debut album, I want to talk a little bit about your history. How did The MoreDidge Brothers as a project originally come about?

We orginally started out as just 3 friends having a jam and thought we could actually make something of this.

.

You recently changed your name from The Moorditj Brothers (a traditional Noongar word) to The MoreDidge brothers out of respect for the Noongar people and the culture. What was catalyst for this decision?

Our original didge player Jamie Gresham brought this name to the group as this is what was given to him by his Noongar friends. Once he left the band we thought it was a good time to shift the name.

.

Was there much of a difference in the writing and recording processes between your EP and Royal Tea?

We spent abit more time on producing this album where as our first EP was live and more “jamming”.

The album was produced by Matt Gio who has previously worked with the likes of San Cisco, Birds of Tokyo and Katy Steele. What was experience like working with Matt?

Matt was great to work with. He has some great ideas and is a mint musician.

.

Do you think you will continue to work together in the future?

We are in the process of working with a different producer on the next release.

.

You’ve previously said that you didn’t get too personal when it came to writing the album and just wrote about relatable, enjoyable things. Was this always conscious decision?

Not so much a conscience decision but its just how it worked out. The songs in this group are more good times, unpretentious and less about the vocals, more about the didge and fun vibes.

.

Do you think you will stick to relatable, feel good themes moving forward? Or progress into more personal themes?

Going by our current writing it seems to be sticking with the same kind of themes.

.

If you had to recommend a song for someone who was listening to the MoreDidge Brothers for the first time what would it be?

Lets Dance from our first EP is a great track to get our overall vibe by Down By The Beach off our latest record and the film clip really shows what we are about.

.

What was the decision behind releasing ‘Down by the Beach’ as the first single from the album?

It was always just the centre point of the new album. Catchy and fun. We recorded the clip down in the water at the beach. Just trashing some gear and having a ball.

MoreDidge Brothers // Didge. Drum. Dance.

.

You are heading over to Europe to tour in July/August. How will the release of the album affect the live show and the setlist?

We weren’t originally going to take our bass player over, but we have secured a few other festivals now so want to take our full show over and give them everything we can.

.

Is there a particular show you are most looking forward to?

Kunstmue in Austria and Didjinoz Festival in Italy are going to be mad.

.

Lastly, just for fun – what is one song that fans would be surprised that you liked?

I heard a song on radio the other day and I thought hey this isn’t bad. Turns out it was Justin Bieber.
