Rae-ification is a real thing that can affect a purveyor of pop-punk tunes with vulnerable lyrics and a side of upbeat rhythms. That’s the condition that may happen to you once you listen to Melbourne singer, Rae Santos’s bittersweet and rocking tune “Red Wine and White Lies”.
With a punchy bass line and nimble guitar riffs that drive the song, “Red Wine and White Lies” has all the elements of an indie rock song. Strong chord progressions are coupled with Rae’s smooth and mellifluous vocals, and with its emphasis on repetition, it has you vibing along in the chorus even if you haven’t quite mastered the words yet. The song is rooted in the heartbreaking realisation that your relationship is on the rocks.

In “Red Wine and White Lies” Rae’s raw lyrics depict a relationship on the brink of collapse, yearning for the past when everything was perfect. The lively and energetic beat, along with the unmistakably pop-punk tune, serves as a desperate plea for relief. Rae skillfully weaves in these conflicting emotions to reveal a sense of fragility, almost like shedding your protective layer and revealing your true self to your significant other authentically and sincerely. He does all this by contrasting heartbreak with a bright dance tempo. The track displays shades of Paramore, The Jungle Giants and Lime Cordiale, so if you love your sing-a-long festival anthems, then you’ll really dig Rae Santos and his blend of genre-bending jams.
To complete the song, Rae entrusted production to Spud Thompson and mixing to Michael Clarke who has also lent some of their performing expertise to the track. The result is a song that exudes a warm and lively mood. It’s a jam, with Rae expressing himself with his heart on his sleeve. It’s the kind of pop-rock that connects with an audience because of its relatable life experiences and soothing melody.
