Rance Lazarus’ latest offering, Bullet comes bursting out of the gate as a pop-rock break-up anthem. Popping off like a celebratory bottle of champagne, Bullet is effervescent, sparkling with emotional insight and overflowing in cathartic clarity.

Rance who hails from Melbourne has been writing for a while now and his latest single delves into the relief and realisation that a failed relationship was a blessing in disguise, yeah that bullet.

“You were a mistake I don’t make any more/…I dodged a bullet.”

The song really shines in the chorus where Rance takes it up a gear. It’s big, powerful and despite the subject, its evokes a feeling of release and sounds arena-ready. What elevates Bullet beyond standard heartbreak fare is its sense of momentum. It doesn’t wallow, it’s almost joyous. The production builds like a slingshot being pulled in tight before release snapping forward with every chorus.

The lyrics are delivered with a bit as Rance throws off the toxic behaviour of his ex, but the irresistible melody turns this breakup track into a dance anthem. Rance’s influences Coldplay, LANY and Ed Sheeran are present here. There’s a cinematic swell in the layering, we’re talking hooky riffs and sparkling guitars that shimmer in the background as Rance’s vocals lead the way with youthful urgency without over-singing. There’s a looseness in his delivery that provides the counter point to the early 2000s pop-punk DNA that runs through the production. The guitars are bright and compressed, and the drums punch through the mix. The end result is a track that is hyper-clean and radio-ready for insufferable singing in the car when no one is watching.

Rance has taken heartbreak and flipped it into a victory chant. With Bullet, the young songwriter takes a confident solid step in showing his talent at writing cracking pop tracks that can cut through the noise and get noticed.
