“An artist who refuses to limit herself…” – Katie Brown, The May Magazine
New Zealand based Australian artist Renee Millner is one of those truly distinctive musicians who can weave an honesty in her songwriting that conveys the sense of uncomplicated truth. After receiving attention from her recent releases “Out Their Windows” and “Fly Me Back”, Millner adds another brush stroke to her canvas with the immediately catchy song “So Much”.
It’s best not to try to peg Millner into any one genre, her music is a union of several influences that permeate her songs creating this wonderfully grounded mix of blues, indie, folk, rock and even a smattering of pop-electronic. Think Julia Jacklin and Beth Orton. You can hear all this and more in “So Much”, a song that Millner wrote in response to embracing her self worth and trusting her instincts in the face of opposing opinions. “Like most artists I know, I haven’t been immune to the opinions of others. I have often taken on someone else’s opinion rather than trusting my own”. With “So Much” Millner consoles and advises not only the listener but herself as she croons about not listening to the naysayers and recognise the love and support that surrounds us.

“Renee’s unique voice and talent to convey emotions through music
makes her one of the most idiosyncratic artists in Aotearoa right now
that’s yet to become a household name” – Silke Hartung – Editor, NZ Musician Magazine
Rooted in a soulful groove, with a hooky guitar Millner’s voice is truly the star of this song. Her vocals are a rich blend of soul, rock with a smokiness that slips into a honeyed tone as she extolls about the good that surrounds us. “So Much” is as much a song of comfort as it is an introspective pep talk. The song exudes a brightness that is created by the addition of airy keys, an electro-synth line and a few hand claps for good measure. These different textures create a soundscape that feels rich and expansive to provide the perfect setting for Millner’s idiosyncratic vocal.
This is the type of song that makes you feel stronger each time you listen to it, and you’ll want to give this more than a solitary outing because “So Much” is one of those fine examples of twisting the norm to create something that sounds remarkable distinct.
‘So Much’ will be in Digital Stores on the 10th September
