RL Grime has being killing it since the release of his debut album VOID 4 years ago. Now fans across the globe have been waiting to get their hands on his highly anticipated second album Nova.

Nova really sends us into a new RL Grime universe opening our ears to a different sound from him. From the first notes in track 1 Feel Free, I knew we were going on a hell of a ride. Feel Free is an instrumental track that builds from simple beats to an infectious drop.

While grooving along and feeling free, a simple beat and strong vocals from Freya Ridings enter my ear drum. This sends us into track 2 Shrine ft. Freya Ridings and if the tracks were planets, we have just landed on pop influences. You can hear pop influences in this track that meet with dramatic lyrics that explore having someone by your side and moments of simple melodies.

While still hanging on the pop influence planet, track 3 Light Me up ft. Miguel and Julia Michaels gives us these vocals that melt right into every smooth loving beat. This builds into an uplifting chorus lighting up the track.

As we leave pop influence planet, we enter Hip Hop Influence. Three tracks new single Undo ft. Jeremiah & Tory Lanez, Take It Back ft. Ty Dolla Sign & Tk Kraviz and OMG ft. JoJi & Chief Keef all give those dirty hip hop beats. While each track holds its own, you can’t help but to get down and rap along.

.

The next five tracks really showcase RL Grime’s talent, taking us on a journey with tracks that could easily soundtrack a movie. Track 7 Shoulda allows your ears to ride the wave of industrial sounding beats. These smoothly transition into track 8 Reims which cinematically builds and completes with complex drops.

Track 9 Pressure, is filled with hard hitting synths and thick bass. This leads to a jet fueled ride, with a pinch of Indian sounds for track 10 Era.

The dramatic journey that RL Grime sends our ear drums on, comes to an end with a soft electro carried by a piano interlude Run For Your Life.

Don’t worry the party doesn’t end there. Party vibes are around the corner. Already released single I Wanna Know ft Daya restarts the party with sing along lyrics and dance along drops. Track 13 UCLA ft 24hrs will get you jumping up and down.

Track 14 Rainer, is the final instrumental on the album. The track begins quickly and slowly builds to a beastly bass drop.

Rainer merges into the final track of the album track 15 Atoms ft Jeremy Zucker with airy vocals and melody. Atoms, is a slow song with an emotional connection through the lyrics “Take me back to your atoms.” It’s a nice way to end an album.

RL Grime‘s Nova is definitely a musical journey that one should all take.

Nova will be released on 27th of July.
