The last time I saw Robbie was when he had toured back in 2018, so I knew I had to arrive early to ensure I could get a prime spot on the lawn. Driving into Sirromet Winery at Mount Cotton, it was clear we were about to experience a show like no other. Hours before the gates were to open there were already hundreds of seasoned fans sharing stories and becoming re acquainted in the line. Some fans I approached had come from as far away as Las Vegas, UK and Germany. The excitement was building despite the fact we had over 7 hours until the man himself was to hit the stage.

Warming up the audience was duo Tim Metcalfe and Flynn Francis also known as Lufthaus, whom worked with Robbie during covid to release a catalogue of dance music. They shared with us that this was their 57th show with Robbie, had been travelling all over the world on the tour, and were really happy to be home. Their opening set was followed by Gaz Coombes, who was the front man of the English band Supergrass. While the crowd appreciated the support bands it was clear the anticipation and excitement was growing as we neared closer to Robbie’s 8pm start time.

As the sun set over the lush winery our hours of waiting seemed distant now. The stage screens lit up and started counting  us down from ten. 10,9 …….5 4 3 2 1…… Robbie burst onto the stage with a backing 9 piece band and 6 dancers, then kick started the party with ‘Hey Yeah Wow Wow’ and ‘Let Me Entertain You’, which had every one of the 13000 plus crowd on their feet.

Robbie exclaimed “Tonight I am going to take you on a journey of the highest of highs and lowest of lows.  The purpose of me to be here tonight is to entertain you . But rather than me tell you let me show you!”

Just like his recent Netflix documentary, it was evident from the outset that tonight’s performance was going to be a raw and honest sharing of the many emotions his career has taken him thus far in thirty years. It was also clear that his school boy devilish humour was to play a part in tonight’s show. A humour and banter I think the Brits and Aussies share and have in common.

After an uplifting and crowd engaging performance of ‘Strong’ the crowd interaction continued and Robbie said “During that song I like to go into the crowd to see what type of audience we have and I have to say it is not like the 90’s anymore” he laughed and continued “I used to be a sex symbol you know!  Now, this lady just wants to F$%king mother me. She was checking my temperature to make sure I was ok, which is nice. Then on this side I had a lady flashing me. Thank you for that, although that is completely useless in 2023. But what is weird over here, is someone else over on this side tried to grab my penis”.

This was an ongoing revolving joke, with the crowd often being referred back to as various parts of Robbie’s anatomy. No one seemed to object to seeing visual displays of Robbie’s “bom bom” as he referred to it as.

We were within 1.5 metres of the stage and had a front and centre spot. A perfect spot to see every expression and visual alongside each and every one of his stories or banter with the crowd. The wry smirk, cheeky expressions and larrikin banter added to the enjoyment of the evening. One fan in particular was Russell (from Robbie’s home town of Stoke) who had a starring role in the show with Robbie regularly engaging and getting to know him and his family. Some people have a fleeting ‘moment’ with the artist at a show and share the story for years to come. I think I will do so as Robbie blew me a kiss, gave me a wave and threw me a tour shirt, but for Russell he had his 15 minutes of fame, if not more. I am sure this night will be the basis of many stories for him. A precious engagement that Robbie enjoyed as much as his fan.

The audience were surprised throughout the night with covers of ‘Could It Be Magic’ by Barry Manilow, ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ by Oasis and ‘The Voice’ by John Farnham. These songs turned into a massive sing along for the entire crowd from the front row to the very back.

Some of my other favourites of the evening were ‘Back For Good’, ‘Better Man’, ‘Kids’ and of course ‘Rock DJ’.

After this pinnacle moment of ‘Rock DJ’, Robbie made his exit only for the crowd to erupt expecting more as they were not done yet. The encore included an Aussie anthem classic of ‘You’re The Voice’ with bagpipes and all. This got the audience back up on their feet to join in. I think we can all officially declare on our resumes now we were Robbie Williams backing singers on the night. Perhaps a slight exaggeration of the truth but quite frankly I think we all nailed it.

Following this song another audience member Carol was lucky enough for Robbie to spot her sign which read “Can I grab a feel down under?”.

Her boldness paid off with Robbie walking down to embrace her. An embrace lasting at least 30 seconds with Robbie saying “Carol is strong like bull!”

After what seemed to be an eternity Robbie sang ‘She’s The One’ and dedicating the song to Carol. Not taking his eyes of her for the entire song it truly was a special moment. At the end she teared up and declaring her love to Robbie. A moment I am sure many women (such as myself) were very jealous but happy for her.

To end the night, we were asked to all light up the venue with our phones. As we did this we were in for yet another sing along to my favourite Robbie song of all time ‘Angels’. The venue lit up and everyone sang in the most beautiful harmony.  A perfect way for the night to come to an end.

With minutes remaining the night was rounded off with an acapella medley of ‘Let Me Entertain You’, ‘Strong’, ‘Come Undone’, ‘Better Man’, ‘Feel’ and ‘Angels’.  An emotional Robbie then exited the stage to a very satisfied crowd.

The Robbie Williams XXV Tour proved once again why Australians love Robbie and even more so why Robbie loves Australians.   The happiness radiated and rubbed off on a very satisfied audience as Robbie told us all tonight  “I am happy to report the man you see in front of you today is the happiest I have EVER been. You see what I was running away from, I should have actually been running towards.”

Robbie most certainly did not disappoint and left us wanting more.  Thank you Robbie for the performance, you were well worth the wait.  See you at the next one!
