Watching Australian rock powerhouse, Rose Carleo Band, rock the house down at Frankie’s Pizza truly gave me an appreciation for experienced performers and their dedication to their craft. The Rose Carleo Band, made up of Rose Carleo on vocals and guitar, Mick Adkins on guitar and backing vocals, Steve King on bass, and Mick O’Shea bringing the beat on drums. Even though it was the band’s first time playing at the venue, it felt as if they had been playing at Frankie’s for at least 20 out of the 25 years they’ve existed.

The band started off the night playing some of their own songs, ‘Ten Years’ and ‘Down and Dirty”. Rose’s vocals are a perfect balance of raw and polished which portray every emotion that is contained in the songs. A special mention should be given out to Steve King, a.k.a ‘Kingy’, because just by watching him play you could tell how much he belonged on the stage playing the bass guitar. ‘Kingy’ was so immersed he was in his performances that he literally let his hair down during the third song, a cover of Cat Stevens’ “The First Cut Is Always The Deepest”. The band powered through the rest of their first set, a mix of covers and originals, finishing off with their song ‘Faded Tattoo’ that got the audience up on their feet dancing and head-banging along to the beat. Before I knew it, the set was over and the curtains were drawn for a quick 10 minute break.

The second set started off with a bang, with the Rose Carleo Band performing my favourite song of theirs: ‘Time is Now’Between the intense rock music, Rose’s husky vocals, and the drinks that were flowing at the bar, it was truly an awesome environment for any rock enthusiast. The first cover to appear in the second set was clearly a crowd favourite, Janis Joplin’s iconic song ‘Piece of My Heart’Looking around, I saw most of the audience singing along to the song, particularly the chorus, and just enjoying themselves in the moment.

‘Knock me Down’ and ‘Coat Tail Rider’ were the next two originals performed by Rose and her wonderful band before they talked and interacted with their audience. Rose introduced each of the band members to the latecomers in the crowd and cracked a few jokes, which showed me how humble and thankful Rose and her band were after all their years of performing and creating music. A couple of covers later, the Rose Carleo Band were down to their final two songs, their title song ‘Battle Scars’ and then ‘Between the Rock and the Roll’.

To sum up my experience watching the Rose Carleo Band, all I have to say is that they’re the kind of band that rocks hard enough for three bands, hence why they didn’t have a need for any support acts. All of the love they have for performing barely fits Between all the Rock and the Roll!
