It’s been a long while since Sydney trio RÜFÜS DU SOL have performed on home soil, and the fact that they’re playing two consecutive nights at Brisbane’s Riverstage mean that they have been sorely missed.

Punters who have been waiting all night for RÜFÜS won’t let the light drizzle rain on their anticipation. It’s a shoulder to shoulder crowd as far as the eye can see, so once the lights dim and the horizontal set light up, it’s fairly unsurprising that Riverstage turns into immediate chaos.

The set starts with the extended intro of Eyes, the slow build of synth with buttery smooth vocals an instantly satisfying to all senses. While RÜFÜS’ vocals and instrumentals are impossible to fault, the whole set up is aided by the horizontal strobes and flashing lighting rig the boys are playing in front of. The stunning visuals make the performance entirely encapsulating, and work to keep the audience glued for the entire set.

There’s a quick introduction before the band roll straight into Like An Animal, and it’s clear to everyone that RÜFÜS are going to go hard and fast the entire set. And why wouldn’t they? As the set unravels, we’re reminded of just how many hits the band has. There seems like hardly any room to breathe between tracks, but it’s the best part of what RÜFÜS are offering tonight.

Some tracks, such as You We’re Right and Lost In My Mind, boast extended instrumental of hard-hitting synths and punchy drums that show off a heavier side to RÜFÜS – one more true to their dance/techno roots. It’s the vocals from Tyrone Lindqvist, however, that give the band a sense of balance that seems so lacking from others in the genre. Lindqvist lyrics remain steady throughout the set, only building ever-slightly as to never overpower his bandmates. It’s this contrast of vocals and instrumental that make RÜFÜS such a powerhouse performance that peaks in all the right places.

I feel as though I’m not alone in saying that the set, a journey between all studio releases, brought with it a sense of nostalgia and familiarity. Despite, admittedly, not being the biggest of RÜFÜS fans, tonight’s set was a reminder of not only why the trio are still selling out massive venues, but how they got there in the first place. Each of their releases has infiltrated the music scene on both a huge scale, to the point where it’s highly likely that anyone even vaguely in touch with Australian music would be able to recognise at least one of tonight’s tracks. Each intro brings with it a roar of approval that starts as soon as punters are able to recognise which song RÜFÜS are about to unleash.

The set is an hour and a half set of non-stop hits, which feels both exhausting but over too soon. An encore of Lost in My Mind and No Place prove that the boys really have saved the best for last, using the two tracks to reiterate just how talented they are as a band.
