This new track by Lachlan Grant Splendor is the first single to be taken from his new album The Choice Is Yours. With four albums under his belt, Lachlan is primed to enter a new phase of his musical journey. Known for trekking across the globe for inspiration and experiences which serve to bolster the credibility of his music, this method of drawing upon a variety of disparate influences seems to have worked with this latest track, Fathers Second Son. Despite the very personal nature of the lyric, for which he assumes the first-person point of view, the issues explored here are universal and relatable. Lachlan is expressing ideas about self-discovery, finding one’s own particular truth and not letting others, or the outside world, dictate your path or the direction your life takes. They’re strong words and they’re performed with clarity and an uncompromising exuberance, and of course, in Lachlan’s indelible vocal style.

The musical genre here is adult contemporary, with aspects of indie folk and roots rock. Providing the foundation for Lachlan’s intimate cadences is a band sound that never impinges on the vocal, allowing the reflective nature of the lyric to shine through. The song begins with verses whose melody is efficiently brief yet robust, allowing space to become an important and integral part of the structure. The verses lead to a pre-chorus which is a cleverly modified version of the verse, though with less space and giving some clues to the listener about what lies ahead. When it appears the chorus feels like the right kind of pay-off. It’s sort of cyclical in nature, rousing and hooky, with the feel now firmly establishing an effective rollicking character. Perhaps what is most noticeable about Lachlan’s performance is the discreet confidence in his approach. Such material, with its focus on the big themes in life, can miss the mark if delivered with an uncommitted vocalist—but that’s not the case here. The spiritual yearning here sounds authentic, real and decidedly unpretentious. And for that reason, audiences will no doubt relate to Lachlan’s veracity and be drawn in by his honesty.
