The first release from Sam Michael Trowse since going solo after years spent in various bands is called I See You ( Falling From Grace), an impressive alt-rock indie record that draws its influences from many disparate sources, coming together in a unique blend of rock, post-punk and modern new wave with dashes of alt-pop in there also.

Sam Michael Trowse’s vocal performance swings from soaring to understatement with the conceptual heart of the song never far from the subtle dramatics and driving rhythms. As if echoing the lyric, which examines themes of redemption and renewal, See You is multi-layered and multi-faceted. Kicking off with a vocal and key part that’s perhaps the element of the song which is most pop-like, it soon becomes a straight- ahead amalgamation of jaunty guitars, ethereal ambiences and a rhythm section that pummels its way through the track. The chorus appears soon after, which has a primary hook you won’t be forgetting for a while, a hook that trails off into another sub-chorus which provides a satisfying transit into the verses. This is where the mood shifts, as one would expect, utilising an unpredictable chord progression and a more subdued vocal performance from Sam.

The track has an unconventional arrangement that works well, with the sub-chorus bookending the second verse. The bridge is a real surprise, with its curtailed rhythm section, an undercurrent of synths and Sam’s vocal providing the singular point of communication. And what is he saying? Well, it’s a big theme; redemption. It’s a worthy concept to explore, and seems remarkably well-suited to this kind of alt-rock style, as it careens from low-level energy to searing dramatic force.

Sam’s performance is key here, robust and exuberant when required and subdued and restrained when it is needed. I See You is a felicitous debut, intense yet teeming with a sense of wry urgency and sure to attract a lot of attention on all radio and streaming platforms.
