“I’m young and I’m foolish, I’ve made bad decisions. I block out the news, turn my back on religion. Don’t have no degree, I’m somewhat naïve. I’ve made it this far on my own…”

‘Pray’ is the new single from Sam Smith. Released on March 28th, the three and a half minute track features American rapper Logic throughout the verses; the single version different to the version released on Sam Smith’s second album, The Thrill Of It All. If you’re used to the original version, it takes a couple of plays to get used to the rap element of the song. In saying that, the rap element gives the pop ballad a real, organic, contemporary layer and perspective to the track. Since its release, the audio track on YouTube has been played nearly one and a half million times.

“But lately, that shit ain’t been getting me higher. I lift up my head and the world is on fire. There’s dread in my heart and fear in my bones, and I just don’t know what to say… Maybe I’ll pray, pray. Maybe I’ll pray. I have never believed in you, no… but I’m gonna pray…”

‘Pray’ embodies a modern take on your gospel-inspired track, discussing all levels of religion. Sam Smith explained to Billboard that the creation of ‘Pray’ was inspired by a trip he took to Iraq with the charity War Child, an eye-opening experience for anyone who has not experienced war in their life or their country.

“Won’t you call me? Can we have a one-on-one, please? Let’s talk about freedom…”

The lyrics fit like a glove to the inspiration and themes of the piano-led, symphonic song, resonating with all regardless of religion, regardless of past decisions and experiences – “everyone prays in the end”.

“You won’t find me in church, no. Reading the bible, no. I am still here and I’m still your disciple. I’m down on my knees, I’m begging you please. I’m broken, alone and afraid. I’m not a saint, I’m more of a sinner…”

‘Pray’ is a thought-provoking journey of hope, peace and harmony. It’s a vast difference from the love songs we see Sam Smith create and sing, but ‘Pray’ is a track that will stick to your mind for days on end and your soul forever.
