SAMAS, hailing from Sydney, is an artist that certainly has a full diversity of genres in the music he delivers. His first debut single “Nina” was a reminiscing song, initially written about his grandmother, but turned it into a love song.

SAMAS is now set to release his second single “Mr. Policeman” and if you were expecting anything like the sound you came to know on “Nina”, you are in for a pleasant surprise.

“Mr. Policeman” is a treat for the senses. The song starts with instruments of guitar and drums in a blues funk style for the first 18 seconds of the song. Then as the vocals kick in, SAMAS starts rapping the lyrics which is unexpected to the music just played.

It is a unique and interesting blend of genres which SAMAS pulls off seamlessly in the clever delivery of the lyrics. In the first verse the lyrics speak of appearances and generalisations made by the police when they see a certain type of person. The lyrics “I don’t like crowds or cutting my hair and my kind of shape doesn’t fit in the square, so if you must, grab a score card and size me up” speaks of that judgement of outward appearances and how just by a look, you are already under suspicion.

“I don’t like crowds or cutting my hair and my kind of shape doesn’t fit in the square, so if you must, grab a score card and size me up”

The second verse then speaks of the shoe on the other foot, and the person doing the judging and asking the questions why the police are like this. The questioning lyrics state “I don’t understand why you’re so uptight, don’t you go home and play music at night”. This lyric in the verse pushes for that understanding that aren’t they too just normal people who enjoy normal everyday things.

The song continues with clever rhyming lyrics for a third verse and a catchy chorus featured after each verse of “Hey Mr. Policeman, won’t you go the fuck away, hey Mr. policeman won’t you tell me to my face” repeated twice.

The blues funk fusion sound continues instrumentally throughout the song and after the last chorus is sung there is an awesome 17 second solo of the guitar and drums to finish the song off to drive home the punk anarchist message.

SAMAS have a 5 song EP coming out soon. If the first 2 singles off the album are a teaser of what’s to come showcasing their ability to play across genres of punk, blues and rock, with clever catchy lyrics, then I think we are all in for a treat and it will be a much-anticipated album.
