If Scandal Tree’s latest single “Tooth Fairy” left something under your pillow, it’d be an empty bottle and a cigarette burn on our pillow. Don’t let the chorus chant of “Yum, yum, yum, yum, yummy!” fool you; this is no sweet lullaby.
This alt-rock confessional is from the Gold Coast band tis about childhood myths for adult vices, spinning a fairytale fantasia into a metaphorical sucker punch about addiction.
.

“Who doesn’t love a good song about heartbreak, torment and cannibalism.”
There is a delicious irony baked into this track. From the first warped guitar riff, we’re being led somewhere dark by someone just out of view. The vocals lilt with a half-cocked grin, never quite earnest, always just this side of cheeky. Their lyricism is sharp with storybook imagery twisted into barbed wire.
Depicting creatures who feed on milk teeth but grow resentful when children grow and their supply of baby chompers disappears. In this wonderland, the Tooth Fairy might just be the real-life addiction monster in our lives, consuming rather than nurturing.
Throughout this banging track, the band leans warm and analogue in its production. The guitar tones are worn-in like old Converse. Drums drive with laconic purpose and the bass creeps along in the background. Reminiscent of the 1990s chords of early Bloodhound Gang, Primus and Helmut. There’s control, mood and an insistent rhythm that keeps you locked in.
.

It’s got the grimy charm of your favourite kind of rock anthems that rumble in your veins. For fans who like their rock with a dose of ear fuzz, “Tooth Fiary” hits the mark.
Scandal Tree has recently had a lineup evolution with a new vocalist, creative direction and a full embrace of eccentricity, showing a confidence that puts them right in the moshpit. Is “Tooth Fairy” a fairytale for the messed-up? Maybe, but it smacks with wit and with a sting in its tale.
