Scared of Sharks’ latest release, “Last Train to Wyong” is the auditory equivalent of waking up with a morning hangover and faded memories. It’s a little chaotic, wry and undeniably an Australian experience. Clocking in just a whisker’s hair over three and a half minutes, it’s a rollicking post-punk tale inspired by drummer Tim Shady’s misguided late-night adventure. It’s a cautionary tale of the perils of getting too cooked and trusting public transport.
The song has all the trademarks of a Scared of Sharks’ scrappy charm. It’s rough around the edges, with stripped-back production that makes you feel like you are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with your Converse sticking to the floor of a pub. There’s a looseness to the arrangement that’s endearing as it aims to keep that live sound vibe but its lo-fi quality keeps it rooted in its raw mix. Still, the band’s blend of thrumming basslines and jangly guitar riffs channels the arrogance of The Chats with a dash of urban poetry that’s solely theirs.

Lyrically, it’s a tongue-in-cheek nod to the absurdity of what many of us have experienced late at night when our wits have faded around the edges. References to Jake Karlson’s’ “Democracy Manifesto” speech deliver a wink to Aussie meme culture, while the chorus’ half chant, half lament–is perfect for a sing-a-long with a couple of tins. It’s not subtle but that’s not Scared of Sharks’ songwriting style. “Last Train to Wyong” is here to make you smirk and in a year where the word of 2024 is “enshittification”, maybe that’s the song we need.
The song’s carefree swagger radiates charm even as it risks coasting on a vibe rather than delivering something with significance. That said if you’re looking for the perfect tune for a night “Last Train to Wyong” is the perfect way to kick-off a weekend of late nights and fuzzy memories.

About the Band:
Scared of Sharks are a Punk rock’n’roll band formed in 2016 By Brothers Taylor Schwifty & Jack Malolakis. Spending Their first year as a group based in their hometown of Mogareeka and playing shows around their local area. Lacking a strong local music scene down the far south coast they moved to the Illawarra in 2017 for the opportunity of more gigs and a stronger music scene.
After releasing their first song “Beach Wog” in 2021, the band faced a transition when Jack departed for European adventures in late 2022. Undeterred, Taylor enlisted the talents of Tim Shady on drums and Louis Crouton on bass, forming a powerhouse trio that took their music to new heights. They embarked on independent tours, from the Port Kembla Festival to Melbourne’s iconic Cherry Bar, leaving a trail of exhilarated fans in their wake. Now gearing up to release their debut EP at the end of 2024. Scared of Sharks show no signs of slowing down.
SCARED OF SHARKS will be launching their EP with a Show at Wollongong’s Society City on the 20th of December.
