(Live Review)Review by Audrey Songvilay
Brisbane took a step back in time to the 80s last Saturday night as Conan Gray lit up Fortitude Music Hall. From the moment the lights dimmed and the first notes of “Fainted Love” rang out, the energy in the room was electric.
Picture this: loud singing, fans crying, and lights sparking off Conan’s clothing.
Conan’s signature style is effortlessly cool, and his voice is deeply emotional. Hearing him live is a whole different experience. There’s something raw and real about it; his vocals carry a depth and richness that recordings just can’t capture. Whether he was hitting those high notes in “Wish You Were Sober” or pouring his heart out in the softer, more introspective “Heather,” every song was delivered with passion.
It’s clear he’s not just a studio artist; he’s a true performer.
The setlist was a perfect blend of hits and deep cuts. “Never Ending Song” and “Wish You Were Sober” showcased his range both vocally and emotionally. One of the most endearing moments was when he sang “Happy Birthday” to a fan in the audience. As he strutted along the stage, reading fan-made signs, this personal touch made the night.
The singalong continued with “People Watching,” where the audience’s voices almost drowned out Conan’s, a testament to how deeply his music resonates with people.
If you thought your healing journey was on track, “The Cut That Always Bleeds” likely broke your heart.
“Family Line” and “The Story” brought a hush over the crowd, creating intimate moments shared by all. His acoustic performance of “The Story” was particularly touching, with the room filled with the soft glow of phone lights swaying to the music, creating a beautiful, almost ethereal atmosphere.
“Found Heaven” and “Boys & Girls” brought the tempo back up, getting everyone dancing again. “Lonely Dancers” and “Winner” continued to captivate the crowd, leading up to the much-anticipated “Heather.”
The encore was a showstopper. Conan came back on stage wearing a tank top with “Borjwazeezes,” a playful nod to his song “Bourgeoisieses.” The energy was off the charts as he performed “Maniac” and “Alley Rose,” leaving everyone buzzing with excitement.
The production of the show was top-notch. The lighting and stage design complemented the music perfectly, enhancing the mood of each song without overshadowing Conan’s performance. There were no over-the-top pyrotechnics or elaborate gimmicks—just good music, great vibes, and an artist who clearly loves what he does.
Conan Gray’s concert was a masterclass in modern pop performance. Even if you’ve never experienced heartbreak, his music will make you feel every ounce of the sadness that comes from a broken relationship.
