I’ve been living in Melbourne for 6 years now. I’ve seen many bands come and go. Three years ago, I saw three 18 year old girls carve up the stage at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow in St Kilda. They were tight, they had attitude, they had a huge sound with a groove that got even the pub crawl rolling through outside to stop and run in the room. Their name?

SHEWOLF!

So what happened to them? Well over the last 3 years they have been running riot playing shows all across Victoria and developing a passionate following whilst developing their own sound, their own brand of good ol’ fashioned Rock’n’Roll with a heavenly slice of punk, transforming it into their debut album The Other Side, recently released and performed to a packed Cherry Bar in Melbourne.

The Other Side captivates the listener from the first track to the last. This isn’t your average four to the floor Rock’n’Roll. This has power and finesse. The rhythm section is like jack jumped off his giant bean stalk and fly kicked you in the chest. It doesn’t stop there with the emotive vocals of singer Serena Vlahos capturing the imagination of the listener, pinching at your soul.

The album has quite a few stand out moments, but what I really like is each song moulds nicely into the next, unravelling a story. When you listen to this album from start to finish it is just like reading a novel. Some of the sound and music they have produced takes me back to some of the most powerful Australian female fronted rock forces like The Superjesus and The Baby Animals.

What captivated me the most was the melancholic track, The Other Side. This one got me right in the feels and I felt a sense of heartache from Serena’s lyrics. This song has an amazing arrangement and the layers it builds into is truly something special. The Other Side is a song that could propel this trio forward to a National, if not International touring act.

If this album is just the beginning, there is a bright and fruitful career ahead of this feisty band.
