Short Stack wrapped up their “15 Years of Stack Is The New Black” tour at Perth’s Astor Theatre on the 20th of June. The tour is in celebration of their 2009 debut album “Stack Is The New Back”, promising to play the album in full at all shows. Two local support acts joined the Perth leg of the tour, Ojay and Late 90s.

Ojay were up first. “Walking Like A Dog” was described as a song for anyone tired of being told to sit, stay, and obey. The song has an edge live that it didn’t have on the recorded version, making for an enjoyable and lively performance. A mash-up of several songs, such as “Thanks For The Memories” and “Sex on Fire”, blended songs together seamlessly, showing off the band’s musical abilities. Ojay’s energetic performance was filled with a lot of potential for them to be playing their own shows of this size in the future.

Late 90s took to the stage as the remainder of the crowd shuffled in.

Playing “cruel” for the first time, from their recently released EP. The darker lyrics were hauntingly beautiful, and the instrumental layering was well thought it. “Intrepid”, also a song from their latest EP, was a crowd favourite.

Late 90s took the opportunity to hype up the crowd with the phrase “the stack is back” before existing the stage.

Short Stack, who started playing together in the early 200’s, kicked off their awaited performance with “Ladies & Gentlemen” then moved straight into “Princess”. The two strong starters got the audience instantly hyped up and were great choices for the opening of their set.

The band still have endless banter on stage, a clear sign of a bond that goes beyond the stage, making the show a joy to be at. Their classic boyish humour gave you an insight into the band members as people, not just rock stars, making the room feel like they were in on the jokes too.

The whole set had the audience singing along, a clear sign that Short Stack still has it, and is not a band to be forgotten or left in the past.

Andy (Bass, backing vocals) gave it his all despite starting to lose his voice. Showing a real commitment to the fans and still singing some of his most iconic parts.

The band found a great balance of highlighting all three members, and making it really feel like they all had ownership of the band. An impressive drum solo was performed in the middle of the set by Bradie (drums), showing the band’s raw talent outside of producing pop/punk hits.

The whole band returned for an energetic performance of “Thick as Thieves” before playing one of their more recent releases “Shotgun Wedding” which was a favourite among the crowd. Showing that Short Stack still have the magic and aren’t just back to feed off their teenage hits.

They wrapped up their set with a number of their most loved songs such as “Planets”, “We Dance To A Different Disco, Honey” and “Sway Sway Baby!”. All of which had the audience singing, dancing and clapping along enthusiastically.

Short Stack’s performance proved that Australian pop/punk isn’t dead, but alive and well. The crowd, which was filled with people of all ages, enjoyed the performance from start to finish. During the show, Shaun (lead vocals, guitar) and Andy (bass, backing vocals) joked about the band now being in the “dirty 30’s club”, however being in their thirties doesn’t seem to be doing Short Stack dirty by any means.
