Since winning the Triple J unearthed spot for Splendor in the grass in 2015, three EP’s, sold out national shows and international shows across Europe and the USA. Surf & garage rock band hailling from Byron Bay, Skeggs have finally released their highly anticipated debut album My Own Mess. A whopping 15 track album that includes already released hit singles Up In The Clouds and Sogged Out. You sure know it will put a spring in your step. Skeggs welcomes you into their world with their already released single Up In The Clouds. The Familiar solo guitar riff, along with Benny (vocals and guitar) singing “I might not ever work things out” had me already singing along.

Staying in the clouds, I was full speed ahead into Infinity. Skeggs released a video on Instagram for Infinity that was all about Benny flying through space.

With lyrics like “Satellite up in the night, circling above the sky”. The surfy rock sound really drives this track, it just makes me want to jump around.

Coming back to earth with Transaction Fee. This is a song I can relate to. “Costing money for my own money, $2:50” sings Benny. Transaction Fee is all about when you just want money out from the ATM but there’s this transaction fee. The catchy lyrics and melody makes this frustration thing a good thing.

Toby takes over the singing for Road Trip and brings along a friend Alex The Astronaut to sing along. Just like a Aussie Road trip and that’s whats its all about. Driving along the dirt highway and listening to this song will make it all worth while. This collaboration fits perfectly. Back in the city, in a taxi and Just want to go home, the second single Smogged Out is here. Visiting those nights when you’ve had a bit much to drink and just want to go home. Another song that many could relate to and sing along at the top of their lungs.

Upbeat rock melody gets you moving into Paradise. The little instrumental section towards the end of the song is filled with a head banging drum beat that is awesome. Feeling like your day dreaming with ”paradise in my palm and I got you right here in my arms” is feeling just right.

Margarita just makes me want to go to the beach. With the surfy vibes its out just in time for summer. Toby once again takes the reins and its rock n roll with Couch Party”If you consider you and me watching tv, to be a party” sings Toby.

From the fast and snappy drums and guitar beat, it’s a classic watching TV party that I won’t want to miss. “Even if the light is red, I’m not stopping” sings Benny in track 9 Stop. There’s no stopping Skeggs in this track, its a go go track.

Its time for a chilled out rock song that you can relax to. Midnight Eyes takes you to that place when you want to get under the bed covers, go to sleep but you can’t. Well that’s how the story goes according to Skeggs. But we’ve all been there.

Once you finally had your sleep Harry Mac is there to wake you. A happy, groove along song that is sure to bring a smile to your dial.

Track 12 Need To Do sees Toby take the lead for the 3rd time. Singing about what he needs to do but wants to help his friend. Lyrically the song is written beautifully accompanied with drums (Jonny) and harmonies with Toby and Benny in the chorus. Its snapshots this situation quite nicely.

” Always messing about and testing my luck” sings Benny in Testing.  With their upbeat garage sound, Testing does bring luck.

Track 14 My Own Mess, same name as the album. we go straight into with a dancy beat that’s gets your head banging.

The final track on the album is My Mind. Starting with an acoustic verse then it leaps in to rock heaven. ‘I think I’m losing my mind’ sings Benny, a common theme on the album. The track travels back to just a piano and Benny singing ” She cries tears, she doesn’t love this life no more”

This heart felt verse really pulls a cord. Its quite a sad and sentimental way to end an album. Skeggs brings their signature sound to their album My Own Mess. Packed with surf and garage rock tracks that reflected their hometown and the Australian Culture. Fans will rejoice as it was worth the wait.
