How did the band originate? Did you come from other projects?

Well we all met in the studio to begin with when Parker came in for a recording session. Six months or so later Parker got in contact with Matt to form an acoustic duo, I (Rob) jumped on bass and I guess it continued on from there.

We were all working on our own solo music at the time really, I don’t think any of us expected to form a band but something just clicked and we all decided to go for it.

What kind of music did you all grow up on? How has your music changed in the last year?

Collectively I’d say mostly the pop end of most genres… from No Doubt to Nirvana, MJ to Backstreet Boys, Britney and Eminem.

It was a very weird playlist.

Parker exclusively listened to ABBA. Jks… well, maybe.

It changes all the time really, as we’ve been writing more music for the band I think we’ve all been listening to more modern music… so that’s definitely evolved over the past few years.

How do you find the balance between your everyday lives and your musical ones? 

We all work almost every waking hour on the band so… very unbalanced at this stage. We’re talking / arguing every ten minutes about something new. It’s always good though.

You’ve just released your debut single ‘Pockets’. Can you describe its origins and evolution?

‘Pockets’ came about in a studio session with MSquared Production boys. Shout out to Paynter & Delo! Paynter was talking about China and I (Parker) started telling them about when I was in Hong Kong. I went to this really nice club called Dragon-i (the type of place where your bottle of Moet comes to the table on fire).

I’d literally just got through the door and this gorgeous girl was super flirty with me. I talked to her for probably 20 minutes, she was pretty touchy, so naturally I just thought I must have been really funny. Anyway I went inside to buy us drinks and when I went to pay I put my hand in my pockets and couldn’t find any of my money.

So I went back outside to find her and she was gone – then I realised I was played! The guys found it pretty funny so we just started singing about it over the music that we got cooking that morning.

How do you see your sound progressing in the future? Who are and have been your inspirations?

Thats a hard one, we’re all inspired by so many different artists so when we’re writing and coming up with ideas it’s really easy to take things in dramatically different directions… so we listen to a lot of modern stuff together, like The Weeknd, Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, etc, to keep everyone focused.

If someone had never listened to Sunset City before, does ‘Pockets’ represent your general style?

I think so… we’re really loving the dark, funky, soul stuff right now… so we’d really like to explore that further.

My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.

Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
