Following up the release of their debut EP “I am okay, I promise” in June 2017, Sydney’s Folk Punk/ Emo inspired outfit Vetty Vials & the Sandpit Turtles are back with a bigger, fuller sound with the release of their brand new single “Say” out now.

How did you first get into music? How did your career first begin?

My love for music definitely came from my Dad, we always had live music DVD’s on at home and bands like Greenday and Blink 182 playing in the car. I’ve always had a passion for singing and when I was around 12 my Dad started teaching me how to play guitar.

From about the age of 15 I started playing acoustic cover shows but I only really started to get serious about writing and playing my own music over the past three years after being introduced to a wonderful bunch of bands/people in the Sydney music scene.

.

How do you find the balance between your everyday life and your musical one?

It varies. Sometimes I get crazy busy, but I really look at the music as a passion and everything we do, we do because we love it. If we aren’t playing our own shows, I’ll generally still be out watching bands play. I’ve personally been really lucky that my job is flexible with taking days off to record and tour.

.

You’ve just released *Say* with the new band “The Sandpit Turtles”.  How different was that compared to the EP you did solo?

My debut EP is a product of processing a breakup, it was the one thing that really pushed me to write and pursue music seriously. Whilst putting the songs together I asked for help from a couple of friends to record on a few tracks and they honestly took the songs, and the whole process to a different place, I remember being in the studio and all of us just being like “why don’t we keep doing this?”

I really love that we’ve been able to collaborate on the new material, having other people in a room to share their opinions during the writing process adds a whole different level to the music, and I think you can hear this in the difference between the EP and the new release.

.

How do you see your sound progressing in the future? Who are your inspirations?

We are still really pushing in new directions and growing as a band. At the moment we are leaning towards a much heavier sound then what was on the EP, but I think it’ll really depend on the writing process and what makes sense for the songs as a collective.

I find myself inspired by a really vast variety of music, I can switch from listening to bands like Letlive. to Taylor Swift all in the space of a minute, I think I find elements of a lot of different artists that I’m inspired by and try to harness these to make myself better. At the moment I’m really into The Menzingers and Julien Baker.

.

What kind of music did you grow up on?

Up until I was about 15 I would listen to whatever my Dad was into, mostly bands like Good Charlotte, Blink 182 and Sum 41, all of which I still love today. Then the emo phase hit me (which to be fair never really ended), I’d still say My Chemical Romance are my favorite band of all time.

.

If someone had never listened to *Vetty Vials* before, what song of yours would you recommend them?

I’d definitely recommend “Say”, I do think it’s the most reflective of our live shows. My favorite track from the debut EP is “Home”, that was the song that really pushed me to record in the first place.

.

Do you find there is a fan favorite of all your songs, if so which song is it. And do you see this favorite changing with upcoming new music?

I’ve found that people really love singing along to Closer Than and Inner West Side Story from the first EP. They are probably our catchiest songs and the easiest to sing along to!

.

Where do you envision yourself to be in your music career 12 months from now?

We hope to have an album release and national tour under our belt by this time next year, we have a really solid group of people coming to our shows in Sydney, so we are just hoping to continue to build this, both locally and nationally by touring.

.

Any touring plans for the band over 2018/2019? Any plans for an album at some point?

After we launch the single at Hideaway on Saturday the 9thof June we are playing a couple of really cool festivals that we are stoked about! Blood Sweat and Beers in Sydney on June 30 and Woolly Mammoth in Adelaide on the 21st-22ndof July.

I am also embarking on a little acoustic adventure with my friend from Melbourne Luke Seymoup in July, playing shows in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney. The links to all these shows are on our band facebook page below.

The current plan is to start focusing on writing the album at the back half this year for release and tour in early 2019.

.

Are there any venues or locations you aspire to play in the future? Any major goals or milestones?

It’s funny, if you had asked me that question 12 months ago I would have listed a lot of the things that we have been lucky enough to do already like playing Melbourne’s Not Fest and being booked to play Blood Sweat and Beers in Sydney.

I was lucky enough to accompany my friends in Nerdlinger on their first two tours in Japan a couple of years ago and I’d say a tour like that is definitely on my bucket list!

.

If you could pick absolutely anyone to bring on tour with you, who would you pick? (Dead or Alive)

Is it lame to say my dog?
