Melbourne based musical theatre, cabaret and comedy talent and vocal chameleon Stewart Reeve demonstrates his amazing vocal range, his gift for comedy and shares moments of his life in his new one man show Chameleon playing at Gluttony as part of this year’s Adelaide Fringe.
Stewart has been blessed with an elastic voice and extensive vocal range that he shares with his audience. It includes growing up with Rocky Horror, a vocal progression from Bowie through to Marcy Grey as well as the smalltown boy learning to test his wing’s with Annie Lennox mixed in with a dash of Donald Trump and supermarket check-out scams!

Fringe goers who had the pleasure of seeing “Rebel”, the high-octane live circus rock music, aerial displays, and acrobatic tribute to David Bowie at prior Fringe festivals knew that Stewart has a commanding stage persona and a voice that can recreate musical idols to a tee. Rebel won Fringe awards and so has Chameleon and deservedly so.
There are vocal demonstrations but this isn’t just an impression show; there are jokes and comic stories but this isn’t just a comedy; there is truth and honesty about growing gay with a domineering father but this isn’t a therapy session. This is an all-round entertainment hour. Stewart is a charismatic performer and the audience happily and enthusiastically follows him through the show’s narrative.

Chameleon, of course, includes Bowie but there is so, so much more. We are taken through a musical progression that links one voice to another, shows us the origin of one singers sound found in another singer’s voice. He gives us impressions of his favourite singers as he demonstrates the range of his voice. He gives us comedy and finally he gives us raw emotion when the show closes out with a powerhouse mashup of Annie Lennox, Bronski Beat and a dash of Depeche Mode that ties all the voices with some of the defining moments of his life.
“Chameleon” is great fun, it is a wonderful show a gem to be enjoyed and savoured and has something in it for everyone.
My verdict – 4.5 / 5
