Inner West Sydney fusion reggae/indie rock band Sticky Fingers announced a dramatic return to the Australian music scene on the 30th of March at Marrickville’s Bad Friday festival, and dropping a new single, ‘Kick On’, a fortnight later on the 12th of April.

This is one of Sticky Fingers’ most polished and overtly ‘rock’ songs, stylistically picking up where Westway (The Glitter and the Slums) left off. The song opens with a nostalgic, strummed first verse with lead singer and rhythm guitarist Dylan Frost’s smoothly dysphonic vocals. The gentle hi-hat taps and bassist and backing vocalist Paddy Cornwall’s higher pitched, overlain vocals enter in the pre-chorus complement Dylan’s rasping voice, before a guitar fadeout and powerful drum kicks usher in the quintessential pop/rock chorus. Seemingly written about a tenuous and somewhat toxic relationship, the softer ebbs of the verses and pre-chorus juxtapose with the explosive drumming flows leading into the melodious flows of the chorus, the lyrics and instruments in complete sync to project the message and tone of the song.

Regardless of whatever controversy Sticky Fingers have been embroiled in, their efforts to seek help and reconcile are admirable, and, as always, their music is immensely nuanced, incredibly well constructed and undeniably unique.
