Aussie rockers Sticky Fingers, or StiFi as they are affectionately known by fans, are finally back after the hiatus they called ‘indefinite’ at the time. On their social media, the band calls themselves an “independent clash rock outfit. mashup.” Their music truly can be called a mashup, with everything from reggae to rock and chill indie ballads padding out their catalogue of music.

The band – in particular lead singer Dylan Frost – has had his fair share of controversies in the past few years, but he brings an energy and enthusiasm to their songs that is electrifying. Tonight he is wearing a long fur coat, which seems crazy in tonight’s temperatures nearing 30 degrees Celsius! The band have been on hiatus for almost a year and a half thanks partly to a series of public incidents, following which some people made the decision to boycott them, and is probably why the arena is probably not even half full.

They play a broad selection of tracks from their latest album, Yours To Keep, released this year, as well as many of their older songs. A highlight from the new album is Loose Ends, a song with a bouncy beat on the verses that sets it apart from the other songs on the album. The chorus explodes into a frenzy of guitar and angsty vocals that has everyone jumping and head banging.

The stage is bathed in brilliant red light as they play Land of Pleasure. It is a song you can’t help but sway to and sing along, as Frost’s vocals shine, lingering on the long notes of the chorus.

Everyone’s beachy summer outfits and the stench of sweet smoke burning my nostrils makes this concert feel more like a festival. Not to mention there seems to be no one here over the age of about thirty. It’s the perfect vibes for Sticky Fingers, whose reggae and rock music is a mixed bag of chilled out songs, and explosive indie rock songs.

Bootleg Rascal has a smooth reggae beat which propels the song and the guitar is spectacular, washing over me in a dreamy haze of slightly twanging sound. Frost takes the opportunity between songs to say a massive “F**k Triple J”, prompted by the national radio station’s decision to stop playing all of Sticky Fingers’ music since last year.

Gold Snafu, also from their (iconic) 2014 album, Land of Pleasure, is a melodic song with layers of delicious sound. Australia Street starts off with a slightly jazzy piano sequence, then dips straight into a reggae beat. For me, this song is the epitome of Aussie reggae/rock. The drums on this song are especially prominent.

Whatever your thoughts are on the band and their personal problems, its good to see the guys back touring again; they put on a great show with their infectious energy and bold sounds.
