Subterranean Deadbeats are about to drop a new EP “Spewing Voodoo” and if that title doesn’t give you an idea what kind of band they are, lead single “Hang Me Out” will make it crystal clear for you.
“Hang Me Out” kicks off like a shot of smooth whiskey on a warm summer night. From the moment that bluesy guitar riff hooks you in, you’re transported to a dimly lit bar where the air is thick, phones were connected to the wall and the music was gritty and real. It’s a blues-infused anthem that by it’s very nature of sounding organic stands apart from the overly produced music that we hear on high rotation on Spotify.
Subterranean Deadbeats are determined to cultivate authenticity in their music. The young Melbourne group want to produce music with an edge albeit a rough one. “Hang Me Out” is another groove in their record of songs that embraces the sound of garage rock and is drenched in the colours of nostalgia, blues and a gutteral rumble of rebellion.

Their sound is reminiscent of Bob Dylan when he went electric, The War on Drugs and Australia’s Courtney Barnett. It’s their sharp wit blending with indie rock and folk with expansive soundscapes that captures your attention with a production that is spot-on. Balancing the raw reverb of the guitars with the drums and bass to create a moody arrangement that works in a blues fashion. In between verses a guitar solo kicks off and the expressive and raspy vocals sit nicely in the pocket. At times nothing appears to be going on, giving the song time to groove to the next idea. What you get is a song delivered with enough swagger to make any garage rock aficionado nod in approval.
It’s proof that there is still a place for music that is crazy enough to stick to its guns of blending classic influences with contemporary edge. If they give us more of this and Subterranean Deadbeats may very well be a force to reckon with.
