Subtle Mullets, the proudly queer, five-piece band from inner-west Sydney, have arrived loud and proud with their debut single “Her(e)”, an agitated, grunge-inspired song that harks back to the dissonant indie female groups of the 1990s. So if you vibe with legendary groups like L7 and Veruca Salt or if contemporaries like The Beths and Wolf Alice are more your style then Subtle Mullets will have a lot to offer you.

“Her(e)” is a rumbustious single that was completed in a furious session at the famed Golden Retriever Studios. Having completed the lyrics of the song, the track itself was still unfinished when they headed into the studio. Finishing the track as they recorded the result is a song that itches with an undercurrent of anxiety and palpable energy. By their own admission, the lyrics are sombre as it addresses the decision of moving on from toxic situations and the challenges associated with starting afresh.  Suggesting this song is one of personal experience, lead guitarist, Evelyn Hayes recalls, “The lyrics were relatively dark and had a particular sense of nervousness and excitement to them… I wanted a sound that could express both these emotions as the lyrics were very personal to me.”

The unpretentious production nails that gritty, fuzzy sound that is we love in indie, grunge rock. The guitars sound great and the juxtaposing vocal harmonies still convey a sensitivity whilst at the same creating an infectious song. With “Her(e)”, Subtle Mullets is ready to roll out and show everyone what they’ve been working on.  Amazingly they have already got an album in the can, having recorded it last year, so expect to hear and see more of this fierce and incredibly likeable band.
