‘Led Astray’, the debut single from Adelaide-based indie rock band Sugar Tongue, is a powerful and relatable song that is all about reverbed guitars, expansive sonic landscapes and vulnerable songwriting. They may be relatively green, having formed in 2022 but the indie-rock group is planning on longevity with an ethos of truthful songwriting.
‘Led Astray’ could actually be describing what could have happened had the duo ignored their gut and released the first initial song that was slated to be their debut release. Realising at the eleventh hour that they needed to pivot back to what matters to them, ‘Led Astray’ proved to be the right fit. Lead vocalist Tom Conroy has described how the band wanted to release a song that was “straight from the heart” while showcasing them as human beings in every note. If that was the goal then we’d say it was mission accomplished.
The song is infused with epic guitars and a driving riff that brims with attitude and determined drive. Lyrically the song explores self-doubt and being present in your own life to stay true to your passions.
“I can’t do this all again/fold my hands and pray for the rain/cause the drought is leading me astray.”
Like other Aussie bands Violent Soho and DZ Deathrays, ‘Led Astray’s’ energetic rhythm and rock-driven hooks make it perfect for a shout-along with your mates, while its deeply personal lyrics explore the experiences that can make it difficult for individuals to be confident in themselves and their goals. ‘Led Astray’ is a promising start for newcomer Sugar Tongue, who are passionate about creating music that leaves a lasting impact. With a renewed sense of identity and the promise of new material on the horizon, Sugar Tongue is a band to watch in the Australian indie rock scene.
