Sylosis kicked off their Australian tour overnight. If you’re reading this review the chances are you know who Sylosis are, but if not here’s a brief run down for the sake of formality: Formed in 2000, the British band have released 6 full length albums through Nuclear Blast. They’re forging a strong career and building a legion of fans in the process. Stylistically they’re a tough band to pigeon hole, as they navigate an area where traditional metal and modern metal styles overlap. Gate keeping Elitists might call parts of their catalogue metalcore (a dirty word to some perhaps), however to my ears their sound combines an even amount of modern Thrash metal and Melodeath: A mix of Lamb of God, Machine Head and At the Gates. With all that said Sylosis own their sound. Sub-genre semantics aside, Sylosis’ music is founded on strong guitar riffage and they have a relatively classic and epic approach to song writing. On this tour they are supported by Lune and Angelmaker.

Lune are an Australian Death-core act that warmed up the crowd early. The four piece put on a polished performance that included a lot of crowd interaction across the breakdown laden set. A recent tour with Thy Art is Murder, followed up with this top tier billing should see Lune’s fanbase continue grow around the country. A solid and very professional way to kick off the evening. These guys carry themselves like a headliner.

AngelMaker are a 7 piece from Canada. They’re a death-core band with 2 vocalists, 3 guitarists, and a standard 2 piece rhythm section. 7 members is a lot to fit on the Magnet House stage, but they managed. With so many members you would imagine they have a wide range of influences poured into the mix when approaching song writing. Therefore it’s not surprising that they have a few more elements than the usual death-core act. Slam style brutal deathmetal riffs, a sprinkling of black metal influence, and a handful of shreddy solos were all welcome elements to my ears. AngelMaker were a new discovery for me but they seemed to have a lot of established fans in the crowd – they are obviously doing something right. The light hearted antics surrounding their bass players ‘birthday Shoey’ helped to get any fence sitters on board too. Part speculation on my behalf, but AngelMaker looked a little shocked, very humbled and certainly grateful for the reception received by the Perth audience, being that they’re a long way from their home soil of Canada.
This tour sees Sylosis return to Australia for the first time since 2013’s edition of the Soundwave festival. It was clear that Sylosis’ Perth fans had been keen to get an opportunity to see them (for the first time, or for a second occasion). Sylosis merch was every where I looked.

From the very first track I was struck at how tight Sylosis are. None of the bands last night were loose, but Sylosis were a step up in arguably every department. Every full-band-stop or manoeuvre between tempos was delivered with laserlike precision. Front man Josh Middleton owned the crowd. His onstage presence is commanding and full of swagger – a low slung guitar, black baseball cap, churning out his intricate parts with very little visible effort or fuss, other than the gentle nodding of his head to the music. Its captivating to see him belt out killer thrash riffs whilst screaming through his vocal lines. It must also be said that his leads were very slick. The rest of the band were extremely well drilled too: this is a band at the top of their game. The setlist was a well put together mix of high energy thrashers, mid paced chuggers, old tracks and new ones. Personal highlights were Empty Prophets, The Path, Servitude and Deadwood, but there wasn’t really any dip in quality of song selection or delivery throughout the entire set. Like AngelMaker I’d say Sylosis were a little humbled by the size and interaction from the crowd, noting that they weren’t sure what to expect on their first headline tour of Australia.
The show was a triumph all round as far as I am concerned. Three quality sets were well received by the punters from Perth. It’s not everyday that you get a bill that caters to both the metal and ‘core scenes in Perth (which often seem to operate in isolation from one another). Perhaps the cross over is something to take note of because it was certainly a well attended show, even more so when you consider it was a Tuesday night.
