Musical wonderwoman of the moment Tash Sultana is working her way through her massive Flow State tour with just over a dozen shows around the Country before storming crisscrossing The US and Europe right through until July.
Her rise to stardom has been nothing less than meteoric. The story, now familiar to millions all over the world, is like something so perfectly scripted it almost seems to good to be true. Kid videos a home recording, uploads it to youtube and becomes an overnight sensation. Of course, the story is much more complicated than that and the overnight sensation tag downplays the fact that this kid worked her ass off busking and playing in bands before she found her place among the stars.
Sultana’s capacity to give an exciting live performance whilst wrangling the loops, pedals and multiple instruments she has an extraordinary command over is something spectacular to witness. She also has a truly endearing humility to the way she controls her stage and her audience. Inclusivity is something that clearly matters to her as an artist and her on-stage persona is geared towards making the spaces she performs in safe and welcoming.

Of course she performs the big ones Notion, Jungle, Mystik and Free Mind. Some of them almost unrecognisable because of the fact that when she performs them live the tracks tend ot take on a life of their own. I hazard a guess that no two performances of any of those songs, maybe any songs she plays at all, have ever been the same.
The younger audience, mostly (though far from exclusively) female are enormously vocal in their appreciation for her from the second she hits the stage. This is despite her being the seventh act to perform that day in the gardens of Wollongong University. The other performances include the likes of indie funksters Ocean Alley, lo fi surfer pop act Lime Cordiale, Mollymook-based downbeat electro sister-act duo Clews, Pacific Avenue, Big Words and The Zilzies.
The palm trees and the sea air, the uni vibe, the ‘gong crowd and the killer line-up made for a killer afternoon and evening of super chilled vibes to mark the end of the summer and the start of a year set to be the one where Tash Sultana takes over the world.
